Well the car hoist, I was hoping to use on Friday night fell through, due to time over-runs on other projects.
So this morning I began the install out on a concrete slab at a friends house.
The Tranny NP435 was already completely gone through last week, and I installed the new adapter and shaft, Thursday night. The Atlas is a very straight forward, and an easy install. The hardest part was getting the tranny, which weighs about 100 lbs up and into position, without anyone to help. I figured the easiest way to, get it done was to use a small come-along, that I keep in my tool box. I chained it around my roll cage and bolted a short piece of chain to a couple of bolts on the top of the tranny, then hoisted it into place. Here are a few pics.
The Atlas and tranny in their final assembly, ready for install.

Here is a pic of the combo installed, and at the aprox elevation. Tomorrow the cross members and skid plate will be built. Monday I will have my original drive shafts re sized. The front drive shaft needs to be shortened about 2" inches, the rear needs to be lengthened about 4". The rear shaft will be about 24" long in this configuration.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Piece-a-cake, H8..... A nice bolt-up. Tranny-transfercase is an awkward piece, but that just means that you got to be more of a genius than usual to get them in there./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif With a slab like that, a floor jack would be a logical choice, but it would also be in the way to build the supports./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Dave,
The largest floor jack I had available would not get up to the elevation I needed(about 26" off the ground to the bottom of the Atlas). Then I thought about renting a tranny jack, but didnt feel like leaving once I got started. The hoist worked fine for the tranny. And I just bench pressed the Atlas into place,(it lined up and slid into position with very little fuss). The hoist does work great now, as you mentioned, for fabbing, their is nothing in the way.

A tranny jack is akward to work with also .I had to jack the jeep up like 27 inches to get the NP UNDER THE FRAME on the jack with it laid on the jack on its side, then upright it under the jeep on the jack, then lower the jeep to line up the the input shaft.
That looks like a siteglass on the atlas for fluid levels ,I was thinking of doing the same thing to the NP cause the drain fill holes line right up and you can fill it from the shift colume.
H8 Do you think the NP and a D300 would balance out if lifted from the adapter ?I was thinking of drilling two holes in the adapter and hooking a chain to lower it onto a piece of plywood set on small dowels to roll it from under the jeep.as a unit
I need to drop mine one day and looking for the easiest way to drop/install it it.they are both heavy units .My D300 was really tight to fit into the adapter due to someone previously over torqueing the the screws on the input shaft bearing retainer and mushrooming them out.

Jeff, that is looking sooooooooooo good. Great job so far. Like 3/4 ton said, it looks like the skidplates are going to be not too far off flat./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Looks like you got EXACTLY what you were going after./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Installed the cross member today. I kept it simple and did not add the 1/4" armor skin yet. Ill wait untill the exhaust Guru has a chance to do his magic tomorrow. Nothing sits more than 1 1/4" below the bottom of the frame rail.

Nice looking job Jeff! Me so jealous!! That's awesome that it's all pretty much tucked up between the frame rails! Once, again....me so jealous!!!
