I just bought a 1977 cj5 that i plan to build to fourwheel. I am trying to get as much articulation as possibe out of leavesprings. I was thinking of doing a spring over axle conversion using Rubicon express 1.5 inch lift SOA leafs with revolveing shackles. I was wondering if there was any better ways to get as much flex as possibe out of my leavesprung cj?

yea ill finish my profile when i get a minute. The reason for all the flex is me and my buddys are all just getting into fourwheeling so there is 4 of us building something mine being the cj5 my other buddy has a cj5 and the other two are going to get toyota i guess and its just a little competition between us on who will get the most flex.

Run away from revolvers screaming like a small child. Those things are worse than useless; they're dangerous. Do a search here and on pirate to see why.

Spring over, soft springs. Ideal is a flat spring.

Increase the shackle angle by moving the mount in, open up the spring clamps and remove any stabilisation divices. (Sway bar, track bar)

Make sure all your vent lines and brake lines are long enough and that's about as good as you can go with springs.

Actually.. if you want to get the best of the best, get a local 4wheel/suspention shop to build you custom leaf packs. They can do some wicked slick stuff that flexes like nothing else.

you should have no problem building a ramp queen with revolvers or 3/4 elliptical. you'll also want to stretch your wheelbase and "Lincoln Lock" the rear.

Re: articulation out of leaf-springs

How big do you want it? Tire size? Off Road only or both? All of these can make a big difference in how you go. 1.5" springs and SOA will yield about 7" of lift. That's pretty tall. I'd say stock height springs, and a spring over. If you want more clearance, trim the fenders from there or you'll be getting top heavy. If you plan to drive it on the road, revolvers or elliptical suspensions are not what your looking for. You might look into a 1/4 elliptical for starters. Lots of flex there, but a spring over is a good start then tune your driving skills before moving on. Congrats on the CJ and good luck with whatever you decide.

And be careful how much flex that you want. There is a thing as too much if built wrong. Really flexy set ups cost a lot of cash to do right if you want it to work right in the real world.

Search on here and on pirate. Read now and save cash later. AND have a great working rig when your done.

When I first got into wheeling it was the same for my buddies and I, we were always trying to get more flex than each other. After awhile we found out that there is a thing as too much flex, and started to build things with less crazy flex, more balanced suspensions, limiting straps, etc.
SOA is a great way to go, as are all the things listed so far.
Additionally, longer thinner flat leaf packs flex more, try springs from other vehicles (dakota springs, cherokee springs, toyota p/u, etc.) and if you like to tinker and find out what is best for you, mix and match your leafs to build custom packs that perform the way you want them to.

Re: articulation out of leaf-springs

it would be off road only and im aiming for around a 38 inch tire. I seen a cj5 that caught my eye in a magazine the guy had converted it to coils. I was trying to find more info on the internet on conversions like that done on the cj5 any one know where i can find anything like that?

yea im going full width axles but ive changed my mind on the leave springs now i am going to do coils i want to extend my wheel base to some where in between 95 and 100 inchs and i think coils would just work out better with out costing me that much more!
