Anyone ever added a rear wiper to their hardtop?

Hey all,

My 88 was unfortunately too early in the Wrangler years to come from the factory with a rear wiper. Well needless to say with big tires, and no mud flaps here in the great white north I find myself cleaning the dang rear window daily at the local gas station.

Anyone ever tried rigging up a rear wiper to a hardtop that never had one? Was thinkin of maybe jimmy rigging one into the spot where the hardtop hatch handle is as it's pretty much useless. Only problem with that is it's a lot of extra weight on the hatch when its open.

Any thoughts or suggestions???

Thanks guys.

Go down to your local U-pull it yard. Pull the back interior off a 2nd generation of Caravan Hatch and pull the rear wiper motor, wiring, wiper arm, and mounting bracket. With these parts you should be able to easily fab a mount for the YJ hatch. That just leaves some wiring. You could also scab the Caravan wiper module, and switches, but that may be overkill.

I'd pull the module out of a wrecked YJ, ZJ or XJ to run the wiper assembly. Now that I think about it... try looking at ZJ's and XJ's for those parts! Then you've got all Jeep parts!

But bear in mind this is from a guy who doesn't know anything about Jeeps.

After the Mustang convertable with a rear glass window, having the defroster on the glass on the hardtop was a charm in the winter. A wiper by itself won't do any good when there is ice on the window. I did not put the hard top on this winter but compared to the minivan, the defroster is more beneficial than the wiper. The wiper is only helpful when there is so much salt on the rear window that you have to wash the window. I believe you can find do-it-yourself stick on kits for the heating coils.

What's a hard top?

Oh yea.....I think I have heard about those....some guys put them on thdir jeep when the outside temp gets too low....I don't have that problem here....
Yeah just keep enjoying your endless sunshine and celebrity politicians. But up here, Canadian winters would be hell with a soft top or no top at all .

As for the defrost, that's not the issue, window stays clear of fogging (and my defrost doesn't work anyway). So that's why I thought a wiper would be more beneficial. Also thought of rigging up a sprayer with it as well.

The XJ rear wiper has the sprayer built in to the wiper arm; the rear blade is 13". You could find a junked XJ and take all the tubing that runs from front to back as well. :)

Oh, and John, that grey vehicle that is parked in your back yard (there right behind "Mater")...the one that says "Jeep" on the nose...that has a hard top......
