I've read good things about the 2.8 V6 Ford swap. Has anyone done it with a 4sp auto? I would like the OD for highway driving. I can see the problem with tranny length in a SWB, but is should be okay in a LWB, yes? Is the Ford 4sp computer controlled and is this a problem?

I was thinking of a carbed V6, as this would be easiest swap in. How are the carbs offroad?

What kind of cruise rpm on the highway are you guys running with the 2.8/C4 setup? MPG?

TIA

The Ford 2.9 is a very stout motor IMO, I've had many friends with bronco 2's and rangers and they seem to hold up very well.

Not sure, the only trannies that are running of my head are the 4L60Es etc.. and those are computer controlled...

I can respect that, I ditched a TBI setup on my current motor to run carb, but dont understand why you would be willing to wire in a tranny, but not a motor..remmember the KISS method. A well tuned 2.9 carbed motor with a C4 planted behind it would be a good power upgrade for a samurai, and a well tuned carb will perform just fine if you ask me. One thing to consider is what I mistakenly had to learn, every ford transfer case is driver side output, so unless you decide to use the stock setup ( might not be a good idea), you mine as well start studying advanced adaptors catalog.

Surely, you have around 13 more inches (I believe) to work with, the more the merrier.

Ok not to be rude, but I've done many swaps into zuks, and one thing I've came to notice that it takes a good investment and bone solid install to make a swap truck a good street truck, big bird is still not something to just jump into and ride up to the quickie mart for groceries. One thing to remmember about a swap is that your always gonna have bugs to work out afterwards, sometimes more sometimes less, so if your basing this truck around a daily driver, beware. As far as MPG's, block that out, depending on tire size gearing etc...your not gonna like that, but thats no reason to resist a swap. RPMs? again matters on tire size and gearing.

All good points. Thanks for the reply. You are right about upgraded engine swaps - more power (the number one reason), less mpg (unless going diesel) and there are bugs to work out.

I have swapped engines in other vehicles before, mostly upgrading from small blocks to big blocks. These have been straight forward, with good power gains, and only a lose of mpg in most cases.

Perhaps I should rethink my strategy and put a 1.6 16v into my daily driver and do a bigger V6 or small V8 swap for a trail machine with 35's (but keeping it road legal so I can drive to the trails).

Maybe I'll go GM 4.3 or even a 305 V8 w/700r4. THe OD will make it good for highway jaunts. Hmmmm, then I'll need to go with Toy cases probably if I go with that much power.
Then I need the 700r4 to Toy tc adapter. Anyone ever put a NP208 into a Sammy? Just wondering if it will fit between the frame rails. It's got a long tail on it though and slip yoke .

I'll fill out my profile soon. I was in a rush and just forgot to do it when registering.

Thanks again
Any input appreciated.

10 bucks says if the biggest tire your considering is a 35 you'll put that 16v in there and be happy enough, I had a 16v pulling big bird around before I went v8 power, totted 38.5*14.5 SX's around with stock gearing and wheeled like a mofo. Went to V8 cause I was tired of having to 4lo everywhere ( need higher gearing for mud..), but I bet 35's would kick ass even with stock gearing and a 16v powerplant.

4.3 idea sounds good, I had a 305 bored/stroked to 327 in a teal green samurai I had, I liked it but considering all chebbie smallblocks are the same I wish I would have went with a 350, just something to consider. 700R4 isnt a bad idea, steve just made us aware that jeep D300 t cases bolt up right behind them only needed a modified rear output shaft to match the splines.

I had a mated Np203 to my 327 zuk, fit just fine..see no reason why the 208 wouldnt fit...

I have a 2.8/c4/stock tcase in my samurai. It is a trail only rig though. The swap isn't hard, but it has taken time to get things adjusted just right.

If it is a daily driver, do yourself a favor and just go with a 1.6 16v.

If you really want to do the v6 and have an overdrive, i would look into the ford 4.0 with the overdrive from an explorer or maybe ranger(not sure). I doubt the overdrive would work with the carborated 2.8. the 4.0 is a newer better version of the 2.8.

i highly doubt a NP208 will fit.....the NP208 is a HUGE case....

Its not so much length as width. That case is over 18" wide....they wont fit between the frame rails on an Early Bronco so i KNOW i wont fit under a samurai with out hanging down super far...you best bet would be to use a Ranger unit with a married t-case. but the drop is on the wrong side for a zuk. ford transmissions are notoriously long. I looked into it hard when i was going to drop in a low mile 2.3L EFI from an 89 mustang. about yourr only options for a manual is an NP435 with a custom machined bellhousing....auto your best bet would be what zukibrother did and use a short tailshaft C4 from an old ford van.
