After tearing the dash down on both my YJ's to replace the speakers, I actually read the FSM. It says to remove the parking brake mechanism (3 nuts/bolts, leave the cable attached) to get clearence on the drivers side. Passenger side already has enough clearence. I haven't tried it , so I don't know if it works.
I was looking at the rear speaker boxes and talked to Quadratec about them. They said the Steel Horse units were cheap and flimsy, and not as secure as the Thor Soundwedges. I found some Jensen speakers boxes (with a 2.5" and a 4" speaker installed) that fit in the same location for $50. They are a good match for the low end head units in my jeeps.
