anybody had experience with those speaker boxes

I was thinking of upgrading my sound system in my 91 YJ. I don't have any rear speakers at all and was thinking about buying those THOR soundwedges. I would put by own speakers in them and buy the empty boxes. I see steelhorse also has a similiar product. Anybody had any expereinces with these products please let me know. The 91 YJ had the old style roll bars so the overhead soundbar is out of the question.

I have the Thor soundwedge, w/ Boston Acustics 6X9s. I really like how they fit, but if you are going to be running an amp, they dont really deal with a lot of base well. The boxes tend to rattle when I really crank it up. If you are doing without an amp, then they are great.

Just got a set of those boxes and had some Pioneer 6x9's put in them.
Used a set of 4x6 Pioneers in the front( took it to Best Buy for that one, now they hate me there. Put them in yourself for some knuckle busting fun!!)
Powered by the Sony Xplode CD Player (50W).
They sound great even at highway speeds with the top off.
Tops off today for the rest of the summer. WOO HOO!!!!!

Talking about replacing the front speakers, I blew my drivers side one. I just stuffed in a 45 watt Panasonic CD-player and put in 200 watt back speakers. Well, one thing led to another and low-and-behold .. speaker don't sound good no more.

What is the easiest way to replace that speaker? I am wanting a killer sound system when I am done. Everyone I talked to about replacing the front speaker all tell me DON'T BOTHER - ITS NOT WORTH THE HASSLE!!!

Hmm .. I guess that means that good sound isn't worth it? Whatever! I gotta have my tunes loud enough to drown the horible whistling I hear when my hard-doors and top are on. With the top and doors off, I gotta hear the tunes!

What about sticking some woofers or 6x9 in the doors, with a quick disconnect in case you have to take the doors off? Some kind of back plate to stop the beasts from rubbing and ripping... a little water proofing... ??? saves a LOT of room...

the good guys won't let me in the shop after having them install the 4x5's... /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif I tried it, blew a set, and then decided the hassle wasn't worth it..

I made a 6x9 box on the rear wheel wells... sounds pretty good. I angled the front end of the box at 45 deg to move the sound into the cabin... I'm not sure this works so well when i'm loaded down...

You have to remember yo're in a Jeep. If you want actual images or soundstage in your music, you've got the wrong vehicle. I believe 5-1/4's fit in the dash. The good ones aren't rated at anything more than 30 watts RMS so they aren't going to give you forward imaging. Forget about enjoying clean good sounding music and just concentrate on hearing it. I have 4" Bostons in the front, and that's it. I am glad if I can hear anything above 35mph.
Go ahead and replace the speaker. I don't have a YJ, but I think you have to drop the dash. It's fun!
Music is great and all, but Jeepin' is better.

Over the winter, I got some ugly water in my Sony CD-player, and blew it up good and proper. The speakers were rated to work with the Sony, but not with the Panasonic. I went 4 days with out any sound but the howl of the wind through all the open cracks, and the roar of the 4.2l engine

Now that I have some music again, I need to be able to hear it, and with the 200 watt speakers in the back, I can hear it not too badly. There is something about the soundtrack to TheMatrix that really rocks in a Jeep!

I run a 100 watt Soundstream amp, and a Sony EX Cassette player head unit. The CD players skip to much unless you buy a "way to expensive to leave in a Jeep unit". The head unit is in the Tuffy Center console and the amp in a tuffy fender box. I use a crossover to send mostly trebble to the dash speakers(Polk Audio, I think??)since the dash is so tinny sounding anyway. 6x9 MB Quartz(got a great deal and the titanium and polycarbonate construction hold up well to weather)handle most of the power and are mounted and insulated in the Tuffy Fender boxes. Then I use a Sony Discman with 40 second shock memory plugged in through the casette adapter,(you can shake that discman as hard as you want for 1/2 a minute with no skipping). Except for the fact that I have built 6 Circuit Citys in the past 6 years and have had some very good prices offered to me, I dont know if I would go to all the trouble. I rarely ever use the stereo on the trail, but it sounds good in camp.

I know what you mean about skip! My beastie can skip when I punch the gas at a light! Its supposed to be the best tech out there, "never skip". Ya right!

Anyway, still have to get new frontal speakers to compliment the back ones.

Fold down the window and take the dash apart so it can be pulled away for a little extra room. It doesnt take that long and gives you a chance to soak any rusted old bolts in WD 40 while your at it.

If your looking for a haed that won't skip, Pioneer is the only way. I have a DEH-1000 that I got cheap from a friend. It is the bottom of the line model, but it has the same werks as the top of the line one. I have it in my Tuffy console, and have never had it skip, ever. The angle is something like 62 degrees, and the radio is designed for at the most 20. I'm surprised it doesn't skip, but I won't complain.

I am needing to replace the windshield hinges anyway (one is busted bad), so pulling it apart is going to be done later this summer. I will get some speakers and have some fun redoing my beast!

I only wish $$$ grew on trees!

After tearing the dash down on both my YJ's to replace the speakers, I actually read the FSM. It says to remove the parking brake mechanism (3 nuts/bolts, leave the cable attached) to get clearence on the drivers side. Passenger side already has enough clearence. I haven't tried it , so I don't know if it works.

I was looking at the rear speaker boxes and talked to Quadratec about them. They said the Steel Horse units were cheap and flimsy, and not as secure as the Thor Soundwedges. I found some Jensen speakers boxes (with a 2.5" and a 4" speaker installed) that fit in the same location for $50. They are a good match for the low end head units in my jeeps.

I just put polk 5 1/4's in my CJ. Drivers side was a pain, but I did it without yanking the e-brake assembly. I had to wiggle the speaker and push a million wires out of the way, but it went in. worst part is when the speaker magnet sticks to something. These polks are sweet. They will get an amp later this summer. I also put in a JVC cd player with remote. I'm so friggin lazy.

Sounds nice and it wasn't too expensive. Got it all at crutchfield. They had a sale on both things.

Ok, for the front speakers get the best pioneers 97s or something i have them and they're rated to 120 watts and they are quite water resistant. as for a skip proof cd player sonys cdx-c680 is awesome 45x4 watts 6mb memory so if you fall off a hill it still won't skip (ive jumped speed bumps i didnt see and it didnt phaseit)remote and all but it cost $380 unless you have a dealer friend and then its only a like $150 as for 6x9 go with pioneers or infinitys but dont get the cheap ones($90 or $100) cause they distort easy the ones around 200(like $170 or $180) are the best in pioneers that is the infinity kappas are awesome.

I have the Thor Wedge speakers and they are fine. Like it was already said it's a Jeep. I just want my stereo to be loud enough so I don't hear all the rattles and creaks. You can also get a soundbar for the older style roll bars if you don't mind a speaker just above your head. when I replaced my dash speakers I put on wing nuts on the speaker bolts, makes it easier to tighten and loosen.

If you are changing your windshield hinges it is a real pain. I've done it once and will be doing it again soon, this time I am going to weld nuts in place so the next time I won't have to go through all the problem of folding the windshield down and removing the dash.

Picture this, on a work bench we got a Kenwood deck on one end and a Pioneer on the other. In the middle is a paint shaker. The Kenwood and Pioneer are skipping like crazy can't even hardely play. The only music that can be heard is from the Clarion deck, did I mention the deck was strapped to the paint shaker. Love my clarion deck I can't skip it I've tried.

The local stereo shop built kick panels for my YJ and put 6" coaxial speakers in there, waterproof and all. Sounds great. Also you can look up something called a Stealth Box don't remeber who makes it but looks pretty cool, replaces the center console with a 10" sub and still maintains some storage space.
