I am set on getting into the ham radio thang, and I'm searching for a good VHF/UHF (2m/440mHz) rig to put in my ride. Any suggestions? I am looking at upwards of $350 to spend. I am also considering getting a single band rig on 2m too.

Any info greatly appreciated.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif Strange that you should ask that. On Monday I am meeting with a radio specialist who will have some recommendations for us as to what to buy for our Jeep. We are looking down the road and can see that in the U.S. the crap is going to come down in the near future.....gun confiscation.....SUV confiscation....the "Mark" where everybody HAS to have the chip in their hand, or no gas or food....UN troops all over running down "stubborn" enclaves of "independents"....well, you get the idea. FOR THAT REASON we are building our CJ such that we can be "on the run" if need be, and a ham radio is a must. I am leaving tomorow 12/6 on a four-day bidness trip, but will tell you what the guy recommended as soon as I return Thursday night. Don't give up your guns.....EVER! It will only be one step further to slavery./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

You're on the right track. You might look in to Alinco and Kenwood as two sources--both available on the web. Radio Shack's web site actually sells Alincos in your price range. Once you've selected a transciever, log on to eBay and get the best price on your new rig.

The Alinco DR-605 and DR-610s have great features, as do the Kenwood TM-261A.

Good luck!

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif The DR-605TQ @ a special price of $339 was one of the best choices, as was the DR-610TQ for a hundred dollars more. Our choice would be the hand-held DJ-V5TH @ a special price of $239 plus the accesory group as needed. With those units made by ALINCO, you can get in on the cops' frequencies, the feds, the army, the UN SOBs, all of the Reno-ites in the BATF, the business bands, and the new "family" channels. It will monitor several freqs simultaneously and goes repeater or non-repeater. An excellent "end times" radio for when you are "on the run" in your "outlaw SUV" from the gun-confiscating; SUV-eliminating; off-road restricting; mark-implanting; Reno-ite commie SOBs who will be doing the dirtbags dirty work after he declares martial law; stays in the oral office, supplants the elections, and runs amok while congress sits there with it's thumb up.......well, you get the idea./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Better to be a few minutes early than a day late./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

I would love to get into this ham radio stuff. How hard is it to get a license? That would be great to have in a Jeep.

There are currently 5 classes of licenses. One class - the technician class - does not require you to learn morse code. I suggest getting a copy of the book "Now You're Talking". It costs about $20. The first half of the book is a text that teaches you what you need to know to pass the technician exam. The second half contains the entire question pool from which the exam questions are taken. The answers are included too. Some people, including some rather young children, have simply memorized the answers to the questions and were able to pass the test.

Note that a lot more 4-wheelers have CB's in their vehicles that ham radios so it will be hard to actually get to use the ham radio for vehicle-to-vehicle communications. If you can, that's great because the sound quality is FM which is much better than that of CB's which are AM. I take my ham radio with me more for emergency purposes. If I can hit a mountain top repeater, I can call for help. CB's don't travel that far and don't benefit from an existing base of repeaters.

Hope this helps.

I gotta agree with you on this one Dave. Here in NC, they have recently passed (last Wednesday) much stricter under age drinking laws. Now the minimum is a $250 fine and 6 hours of community service for just possessing alcohol. Now, I'm old enough to vote and participate in the government, drive a car, classify as an adult, go to war and die, and go to the electric chair and die; but if I want a beer... HELL NO! Something is awfully f*cked up about that! About the guns, you're right about that too. The whole purpose of the 2cd amendment was to secure the rights of the citizens to keep and bear arms to form a militia to overthrow the government if it became too suppressive, which it is trying really hard to become.

Thanks for the info Dave. I was also looking at a dual bander, the Kenwood G707. It is normally $510, but HRO has em for $339. There is an HRO in walking distance from my house and I am over all the time, drooling. It has a really wide rx capability (like 118 to 174 and 410 to 520 mHz, and expandable to 320-400 and 523 to 999 (with some freqs and cell phone blocked), including the am airband.

But not nearly as much as the DJ-V5T, sheesh that thing covers alot. 5 watts, too. That thing rocks, hhhuuummmmm.

Is the Alinco a better Value? I know that Alinco is based in Calif., in Torrance. i probably will go for a 2m single bander to get started, and to see if I like it.

Currently working thru the "Now Your Talking Manual" Going for Tech, and maybe will get around to 5 wpm Morse Code for Tech. Plus (Which may grandfather you into the revamped General Class....)

Now you need to get a Shortwave radio...

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif The radio "expert' guy has several Alinco radios and even opens them up and "tweaks" them to get wider band coverage. He is a serious radio guy(has responsibility for emergency stuff at a Med Ctr.) and eats, sleeps, breathes radios./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Kinda like some of us do with Jeeps./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

I don't know about other clubs, but half of ours have 2m radios and there is a big push for the rest of us to get our license. I'm looking at
doing so because of all the noise and skip on the CB. In SoCal you have to turn the squelch almost all the way up to blank out the crap.

Was it TJ97 OR 97TJ that has a ham radio that also does CB stuff?????
/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif HOW DOES THAT WORK /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

If you are asking about "Doug '97 TJ", I make the CBrack. Have customers who have mounted everything from portable computers to ham radios and TV monitors. Am not knowledgable on the ham radios themselves, however. You can see it on my web site.

I'm sorry Doug I thought it was you that I saw that had a ham that would
also do CB cannels. It would be nice to have one radio do both with the lack
of space in a jeep.
I see so many cool things on the jeep board and pages but I guess I not doing
well at remembering where./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif
