I just completed a spreadsheet of all the expenses I've put into my jeep and realized I've made some
really dumb mistakes. I look at it now and ask myself, "what where you thinking"?
So I'm curious how much others have put into their jeeps including the purchase price of the jeep.

Shhhh. Don't tell anyone but I'm at $13K.

This sounds like the # 1 step in a twelve step program
# 1 admit you have a problem !
I have Quicken so I enter everything spent on the jeep in that catagory, everything from sandpaper to one piece axels .So when I get really curious I can find out/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gifHowever I have recently made a seperate catagory for all the tools I need to do the work myself so I don't cringe so bad when I see the total.
But I am not ready to admit that I have a PROBLEM yet /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif
Happy jeepin.

Let\'s send the totals to Congress

Ok, we spend a lot of money. Let's send the totals to our Congressmen and let them think about how much we add to this economy. All of my Camping gear cost only $1,000 and I buy the best gear for camping. Who spends more money on the outdoor spaces we are being SHUT OUT OF? Off Roaders, not the Greenie Weenies.

Re: To heck with Congress

I can plainly see from reading all the other posts that I have not spent enough money on my Jeep. I am way below tha average. I feel I am not putting in my "fair share" towards the economy and I must rectum-fy this as soon as possible. I will get to work on a list of new stuff to order. I'm getting out all the catalogs right now.

Panther,

You could become a legend for starting this post. I can just see it when the post counter is up there
with the number of burgers sold a Mickey D's.

"Yeah, somebody started that back at the turn of the century. Not sure I know what a Jeep is though,
must have been one of the first hovercars because they are always talking about being off of the road
and how much lift they have. One thing though, they were cheap, just look at the prices. I'll ask
grandpa if he remembers next time I see him at the retirement camp."

"So what was with all those code names? Must have been a bunch of right-wingers trying to oppose the
government takeover and hiding their identity. Fools, didn't they know that government is good, the
ultimate protector and provider? Got to go now, my implant is acting up and you know how much
trouble that can get you in if you don't have it fixed right away. I can't even get my food rations."

I figured mine up after seeing this post and after doing all I have to my jeep, expenses minus returns from selling unwanted parts, I'm around $7500 mark. That includes inital purchase all the way through all upgrades. Most work I done myself so was able to keep cost down somewhat. Steve

I think at this point, I can safely claim the bone-head of the year on this one. Including the initial purchase, I am at about $34K in the last year and a half. It will go anywhere, but at a hell of a price. My credit card company should put me on their Christmas card list.

OK All -
I'll wade in here:
original purchase 20K
interest 2.5K
lst insurance check 3.5K
2nd insurance check 8.2K
Mopar warranty tab 8.5K
3rd insurance check 6.5K
my mods 5K
planned for the next 18 months 21K
I don't want to hear anything about the total from anybody now or in the future! I don't have a habit! Nor an obsession! And don't call me an addict, either! Tell somebody else they have a problem; not me!
I just love this BBS!

Fellow Jeepers,
It truly shows that all your Jeeps are a Labor of Love (and Love knows no cost ceiling)
I paid about $16k for my XJ in 1986. I've had it ever since, kept in stock form. In that time I've spent more than a couple large maintaining it and repairing the wear & tear that any well used Jeep would get in 15 years of work and play. It still serves me well. It's no longer in showroom condition, to be sure, but I wouldn't swap it for its weight in gold. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Amount Invested Poll--Before/After!

How about breaking it down to Before joining this BBS and After joining this BBS/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif!!!
Before I was really quite happy having only spent a few hundred bucks in minor mods, but after...(checking to make sure my wife isn't coming in) I think the tally is up to about $4000 and of course I just have to replace the D35 this year, get the hypershackles, get the OME lift, get the...

/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Jim, you are a model of the Frugal Jeeper that we all secretly want to be, but our addiction leads us to the catalog and the very next thing you know, the UPS truck is here. Luckily, my wife LOVES to get packages, even if they aren't that interesting, so I always leave them for her to open. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Use caution. Ya' see, this is how I ended up with two Jeeps. I had my '94 Wrangler and got to pricing new ones and decided I could buy a nice CJ7 and by doing that, I could have two Jeeps for the price of one new one. Well, now I figure the YJ cost around $14K, I can't remember exactly, and now I've put about $6K in the CJ and it seems I spend about another $200-$300 every couple weeks on it. At least, I only have a couple of cats to explain my spending to. They bitch a hell of a lot less than a woman. They don't ask to drive my Jeeps either.

Well I wasn't going to post on this thread but damn it has been going strong for a while now so here it is...

7500 new
3500 engine swap
1500 lift and tires
2000 (not done yet) axle swap
1000 miscellaneous stuff i can't think of but my credit card company remembers for me.....

And as far as operating costs....seems like about 5 million dollars in gas

So far my CJ is getting built pretty cheap, this is do mostly to the fact it's been torn apart in my backyard for a very long time /wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif not being in a hurry has let me sit around and wait for great deals so far my total investment is around $1600 and some traded work and parts. Hopefully I'll soon be selling the stock axles for damn near the purcahse price of the Jeep. I've been fortunate enough to work in an offroad shop where I scored many killer free parts, like my dual fraction centerforce with 1500 miles on it, and my $60 chevy front axle(not free but close)What I've learned is having another vehichle to wheel take a lot of the pressure to wheel away and lets you take your time and do it right and cheap the first time. Of course coming up before I can wheel my cheap beast is wheels, tires, and driveshafts which will hurt. Also joining a 4x4 club can allow to meet all sorts of like minded Jeep nuts who you can usually wheel and deal with to clean out each other's garages. Happy Jeepin

I wish I could have taken more time to set up my Jeep, and buy used parts when I could. But I couldn't stand to have my Jeep downfor more than just a few days. It started off being just a play toy, to drive to town every once in a while. Last week I cranked on about 700 miles, this thing has become my dayly driver. My 97 Chevy truck has moved to the barn, and the Jeep has the garage door opener in it now. How did this happen?

I don't like soft tops, and hard tops feel to caged, so I drive around with the bikini top on (the Jeep) and soft doors. It's a little cold in the mornings (30 degrees), but it warms up nice in the afternoon(hits 80 sometimes). I luv my Jeep. Weird.

I was starting to think the old investment poll was gone but it's baaaaack.
70! Wow, whodathunkit.
Of course it's completely out of control as far as determining what has been invested in mods.....
But it's really interesting to see what everyone is doing. I'm kinda doing both the cheap build and
the-what-the-heck-have-I-got-myself-into build. My cheap build is a 82 CJ8 with a 304 for $500.
That's it so far but to get it on the road it'll be another $1000 for tranny, tcase, new bed, roll-on
bed liner and all the little things it needs to get on the road.

Keep em' coming

Lee
