I may be nuts but this is my lasted thought. I currently have a AMC 304 w/TF999 and a Dana 300. I've been accumulating performance parts for my 304, edelborck manifold, new carb, headers. My thought is would it be better for me to pick up a 360 w/TF727 from a wagoneeer (can pick up the entire wag currently running for $500) and have the 360 and the TF727 rebuilt with the performance parts and then drop that into my CJ, or should I just forget that and upgrade my 304? also does the TF727 require more than 2.5" of lift (plus 1" body lift soon)? sorry for being so long winded.

Be careful with a TF727 in a CJ. the front driveshaft can hit the tranny. This combo has been sucessfully done, but motor and tranny
location is critical.

The keys with a 727 in a CJ7 are lift, at least 2.5" and a thin driveshaft, have one built, even though its thinner it can be stronger than
stock.

I replaced my 304 with a mildly built 360 and had my 999 rebuilt/beefed to handle the HP & Torque of the 360. I really like this setup. I think the only thing I had to change was the flex plate.

Mark, I am running that very setup in my 79 CJ-7. I have a 4" Pro-Comp suspension lift and a 1 1/2" shackle lift, with all this my front drive shaft just barely hits my transmission pan but not hard enough to hurt. I don't see how you will be able to run a smaller lift if you do very much off-roading. Mine only hits under extreme flex conditions.
I personally think that you would be better served to have your 999 built up and run the motor that you want. Make sure that you get the kick-down linkage from the Wagoneer so the the V8 and TF tranny will shift correctly. Took me a few months to find me a set.

The later 999 trans have the advantage of a lower first gear 2.74 vs 2.45. also lighter weight and a slightly shorter length. They are easily strengthened to hold a mild 360 by any good trans builder. The body lift won' be necessary for the 727, but one customer with a 401/727/300 combo used a two piece driveshaft with a plate support on the bellhousing for the center support bearing. The Jeep was at nearly stock height though.

a two piece drive shaft? kind of like on heavy trucks right?

Yes, it was similar to a truck setup, with a center support mounted to a fabricated plate that replaced the inspection cover on the trans. The owner said he paid almost 500$ at a driveline shop to have the shaft made. It looked pretty stout though. The mount plate was approx. 3/8 thick and had a brace to the engine mounting pad on the right side of the block. The center support bearing was bolted to a pad welded to the plate below the starter about 45 degrees from the centerline of the engine, giving the clearance from the pan.
