How are the wheel bearings on an AMC model 20 axle lubricated? By gear oil or do they need to be packed like the front ones? The Jeep is an 83 if that helps.

they need to be packed.. there should be an inner and outer seal.. also

can I install a zerk fitting or two so I don't have to pack them? Didn't older Jeeps come like this from the factory?

i have heard of people drilling and tapping holes in the outer seals for a zirt fitting.. the ones i got from superior axles.. had the fittings in them.. but they are to big for the stock 2 piece shafts..

Some rear axle bearings are lubed by diff. fluid.

Where are th Zerks on the Superiors? I have a set of Mosers and would like to add a Zerk. Where should I put it?

yes i believe the 86 d44 rear was lubed by the diff fluid. but on the 20's it should be grease.. well the zirt fitting was.. mmm..on that outer seal..guess you would have to take it out and kinda eyeball it... its like in the corner from the flat part that bolts on to the rise to where the actual seal is at. and on those superiors.. the end of the axle.. round part with the lug bolts.. there is like a 1/2" hole drilled.. so all you have to do is take the tire off and grease them.. when the tire is on.. you see about half the hole..
i gave the axle to a friend of mine.. i might be able to get a picture in a few days. . email me if you are interested...
