AMC 20-Weld the tubes?

I have been reading the discussion about the AMC 20 with

interest since I just converted to one piece axles. My question is:

Do I need to strip the axle housing of seals and bearings before I

weld the tubes, and what type of weld would be best, full-circle

full-penetration or several tack welds?

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif I've been thinking about this too, and my scheme is to use a split sleeve which full welds to the housing, then plug welds to the tube in several places. I'm sure that a full round weld on the tube will just snap it off at that spot eventually./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

The guy who welded mine is a well known extreme off road Jeep shop owner. He used two equal sized weld beads. One on the front and one on the rear leaving approx one inch unwelded gaps at both the top and the bottom of the tubes.

What Jaffer said is one of the 2 usual ways. The other one is 4 one inch welds spaced equally around the tubes.

No one has commented on the most time consuming part. I'm
still wondering about removing the seals and bearings before
welding.

No need to do that, where you are welding is up against the diff. Just make sure it is clean.
