There is only one modification that will significantly improve the gas mileage of a SWB, and that's reducing your cruising speed.

In case you haven't noticed, Jeeps have the aerodynamic properties of a cow barn. Drag increases with the SQUARE of the speed. For example, 70mph is 40% faster than 50mph, but aerodynamic drag is 96% more - almost DOUBLE! And aerodynamic drag is BY FAR the biggest factor which you can control.

Fooling around with the engine might gain you a few percentage points, but on a modern vehicle it's not a given, maybe not even likely. If you're going to get a Jeep, you should consider getting into a Jeepin' frame of mind. Nothing you can do will get you into econobox territory. Other than hooking the winch cable to the back of an 18-wheeler.

Don't purchase a 4 cylinder. Neither the 6 nor 4 are economy savers. Don't purchase a Jeep for your daily driver, you'll fill them up with gas every other day.

Like the others said, its a jeep, not a yugo!
I'd keep looking for a 6 cyl. I don't think they ever made a TJ 4 cyl with a dana 44 as the rear axle (metal screw in plug in the dif cover vs. rubber push in plug) anyways, giving yet another advantage to finding a 6 cyl.

I once had a 78 CJ-5 with a 360 out of a AMX (11to1compression stock) put a Holley Spreadbore on it along with a t18 tranny from a honjo & unhooked the secondary linkage on the carb & got 28 miles to the gallon,,, had lots of power to boot ,,,

Ex wife
got that Jeep ,,,, Damn I miss that Jeep

97 cherokee, 6cyl, auto, pretty stock, City =17-18MPG,,,Highway 20-24mpg...Like they said before speed kills mpg when you drive a brick. Running the AC in the city will cost about one mpg,,,highway the same.
After driveing a pick up that got 10-11 this is pure heaven,,,,,Oh yes the above mileage is with a gentle toe, when you go to the stop light drag races it (mpg) all goes out the tail pipe like a shot. Jeeps, Jeeps, gotta love um.
