Air tank thickness

I'm going to be making an air tank from a tube with steel plate welded on the ends. How thick should the metal be? Is 1/8" too light? I was thinking 3/16" but I didn't want to make it too heavy if I didn't have to. But I also didn't want it bursting apart either. Just something that will hold a max of 150psi.

Personally, I'd leave making an air tank to the professionals. /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but if the welds aren't really good on there you could have a serious issue when pressured up to max... I think I'd go with at least 3/16". You should use rounded caps on the ends too. It helps with the pressure. Look at the store bought tanks, design yours after one of those... /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif The other thing is you'll need quite a large piece of pipe to get it to store a decent amount of air... /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif

The tube I was going to use is around 6" x 25", which comes up to about 3 gallons. Not really wanting to hold a lot of air, just as a buffer for running an air compressor.

I'd go with a factory made tank too. It will cost you less (most likely) and they are pressure tested. If it has a max 300 PSI rating, it probably means it will breach at around 900psi, or more.
Anyways, you never know with a home made tank, you could be filling it for the first time, and only get 50 psi in it before it goes nuke.

Do you think insurance will cover the carb if it some how "teleports" behind the tires of a 350 with dualies?

Portable? I don't think it's worth it.

If you just want to move the tank from one vehicle to the other. Get one for each vehicle since they're dirt-cheap. The quick disconnects alone will be more expensive than a used bottle.

If you mean portable in the sense that you fill it with air and take it along to another vehicle then it won't work. The amount of air they hold is very small compared to CO2 tanks. Even the biggest fire extinguisher bottle you can fit under the hood will not fill a 33".
