I can tell you how I do it. I use the "No Toil" system. It's biodegradable which comes in handy as I live in an apt. The kit comes with cleaner, oil, and a grease sealer. You can clean your filters right in your sink. If your local shop doesn't carry it, you can order it from www.rockymountainmc.com

I see you said grease sealer. I asked my dealer what grease they had that I should use between the filter and air box, he said he had never heard of such a thing. Is that just old school, like he said , and the new filters seal so well on their own that a grease seal is not needed? And, if it is a good idea, what kind of grease do you recommend.

The No Toil kit comes with it's own biodegradable "grease". I don't know about the filters sealing against the air box by themselves, might be true, but even when I used regular air filter oil for the filter, and gas to clean the filter, I used a waterproof grease as a sealer. It may not be necessary, just something I was told somewhere so I've always done it that way. Might need some more input here from someone else to see what they do. When I clean my filter, I use warm water and the cleaner that comes with the kit, after I'm done the water always looks dirty so I know the filter is trapping dirt, I just don't know what, if anything, is getting through.
