After roll. Cutting advice needed.

So I ignored family pressure and went out wheeling on Mothers Day and ended up rolling the Zuke. No damage to me thanks to the roll bar but the hard top and screen copped a hiding. After fixing the sheered off motor mount I got it home and its been covered by a tarpauline while I consider my options. For road worthiness here it needs a solid windscreen but the roof's had it and I've ended up buying an '83 softtop 410 to use as a doner.
I'd like to cut the roof off behind the top of the windscreen but the damage is too severe to recover so I'm resigned to cutting it off below the glass and adding the hinged front screen off the softop.
What I'd like to know is how much patching and welding is going to be required inside the car behind the dash at the bottom of the screen. I guess the dash has to come out while the work gets done?

Its become more of a project car than I expected but I'd like to get going on it now. It'll have a full roll cage before I go off road again.

Cheers Steve.

Yep,`there's a lot of stuff we'd like to do to our Zukes down here that you blokes get away with but to stay on the road we have to have 6 monthly road worthiness inspections. These are getting tougher all the time and a windscreen is required. Steve.

If the tub on the conv. is in good shape I'd suggest removing the hardtop body and just fitting the conv. tub onto the frame. The time and effort you are going to put forth with ALL the mods needed to just swap the windshield is going to be much more than the time needed to swap the tubs over. Swapping tubs can be done in an easy weekend with several friends to help lift things on and off. You could easily do it in a day if you are diligent enough.

The only forseable issue I could see being a problem is that the trans tunnel is narrower on the SJ410 tub than it is on a Samurai so you might encounter clearance issues with the transmission. Since it's been years since I've even seen an SJ410, I can't personally tell you if it would be an issue or not. However, my guess is that it'd be not much more than opening up the tunnel a little bit to make it fit. If asthetics are not an issue then you could simply bang on it with a hammer until it fits.

Of course, this is just my 2 cents...

Crow,

Correct, our Warrent of Fitness inspection includes body rust and having a body that covers the tyres so tube fronts are out, plus a hundred other checks. There's still the odd shop that will let stuff slide especially if its obvious the truck's main activity is off road but for anything different to the original it can mean a trip to a vehicle certifyer who inspects and then attached a plate specifying non standard approvals (wide tyres, flares, different engine, roll cage, welds to chassis.....). Costs around $300 per visit so you go get a wof, do your stuff over the next 6 months and then head off to see the certifyer and start praying.
