Got my tired 258 & T-5 pulled. Have a 258/TF999 as replacement(s). Replacements sold as being 'good to go', having been pulled out of '85 CJ7 getting a 4.3 swapped in.

What should I be replacing/doing to replacements while sitting on dolly/hanging from hoist? (I am NOT separating the two.) No apparent rear main or oil pan seepage, so I am not touching those either. I do intend to check the timing chain/gears.

I am thinking motor mounts, tranny mount, tranny torque bushing (or whatever the tech name for it is), ... What else? Recommendations on going w/ OE rubber or poly mounts?

Is there any kind of seal, etc. in the T/C end of the tranny that ought to be replaced? Anything between TF999 - D300 that is not present between T-5 - D300?

Easier to pull D300 and attach to tranny out of Jeep (then wrestle that long, heavy monster into Jeep or attach tranny/TC in vehicle? (BTW: What's a 258/TF999/D300 weigh altogether? 8-900 lbs?)

Anything else a tyro might miss or forget?

Thanks!

Poly will last longer. but they magnify the vibes. you will feel them stitting at idle more.

I don't think you can get the whole motor/tranny/t-case in if you don't have the whole front clip (grill/radiator...) off. With the tcase atatched it is real heavy and akward to move around, but it can be done.

While you have it out and easy access to everything you might as well change the timing chain and water pump. Check the oil pan gasket as well.

It would probably be easier to pull out the crossmember and trasfer case before you put the engine in. That way you'll have more room to work around in. Get the motor mounts in, and block up the transmission. Then attach the D300, followed the crossmember.

Either that or take off the grill and radiator and put the unit in as a whole. The whole drivetrain is really long and can be difficult to manage.

Re: Advice wanted on installing used 258/TF999 com

Grill/radiator support and cross member (bar under engine, right? or is there another one?) were removed to pull old engine/tranny. Made operation much easier - I'm not sure one guy could successfully pull the combo w/o removing that stuff.

I'll take a look at water pump too. Timing gear/chain already on list. Oil pan is fine. Am I gonna end up w/ a leak if I pull timing gear cover w/o also doing oil pan?

I put in stock rubber mounts when I replaced my engine (258,t-18,dana 300) and promptly broke the tranny mount, bent the passenger side motor mount and put the fan through the radiator.

Needless to say, I would recommend poly mounts. I put a set in mine when I put it back together and the difference is amazing. The shifter used to torque really badly during acceleration, now it barely moves.
As for vibes, I haven't noticed much of a difference, but then again, my Commando is not the smoothest ride on the street.
