\'98 CR250R starting questions

Hey, I have a 1998 Honda CR250R. I was wondering if y'all had any tips on starting it. Its a real chore. It has a FMF fatty pipe and powercore 2 silencer. Other than that, and the jetting of course, its stock. I would really appreciate any suggerstions. Thanks!!

Your CR should be a one kick starter. Most properly jetted two strokes should easily start within the first few kicks.
What color is your spark plug after a few rides?

It's a jetting issue. Go to FMF's website to get a starting point on the jets to go with your combo. I personally have a '99 CR250R with a severe mill and port which starts on the first kick regardless...

If it has tits or wheels, it'll give you PROBLEMS...

That is weird, they are right, a two banger should spark up on the second kick(if not the first) My XR is pretty hard to start in the cold, like 10 kicks, but in the weather(we are breaking 88 degress F) it starts on the first or third kick. How good does it run/idle?

Usually the exhaust mfg will spec new jetting with their pipes. What is your gas/oil mix ratio? Did the bike run good before the FMF stuff was put on? Are you using the choke? How does it run after it is started? When is the last time the plug was changed or when the carb was cleaned?

I figured out the problem, choke lever was messed up. She fires up in a kick or 2 now. It started fine for a long time, then one day last week she got tempermental. Fixed it yesturday, thanks everyone. She's a screaming like usual now.

what exactly did you do to fix your cr?
my friend has the exact same bike with the fmf sst pipe and power core 2 silencer and boyesen reeds and his bike is a biatch to start....i just told him its all in the manufactuer name....but he is constantly tuning his bike

A new plug helps, no, really helps. Also, make sure the carb is clean. Running a 32:1 oil/gas mix ratio(thats what I run, don't know if it will help starting for sure), my bike starts with one kick again! And lastly, make sure she has good compression. I've owned lots of honda's and some yamaha's, liked them all, but this CR is the best yet. Feel free to ask any more questions. I'll look at the shop manual tomorrow for any tips for your bud.

thanks...ill let him about what you did.....he doesnt know anything about bikes he got the bike for $1800.00 as a repo deal and he dumped a ton of money in it, hes got new fastline suspension, fmf exhaust, boyesen reeds, aloop freestyle seat anda ll this other [censored] and he hasnt even learned how to ride....his bike idles weird and it has NO power at all....its by far out of tune cuz it feels like a 125

Try the plug when it takes me about 10 mins kicking I switch the plug and it fires right up. Make sure you turn your gas off after everytime you use it.

Did he change his jetting after installing all this new stuff? With new exhuast and reeds the jetting needs to be changed, richened to be exact. Bigger jets, and carb adjustments. If he hasn't changed the jetting or adjusted the carb then that would explain the lack of power and hard starting for sure.
