I have a 97 cherokee when I shift into 4wd the indicator light on my instrument panel won't light up. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

the important thing is, does it actually engage 4wd or is it still 2wd? If it does engage, check the bulb or the wiring or the fuses. If not then check the xfer case lever.
I believe 4wd is engaged by electric solonoids(Correct if wrong) on 95+ so check that too. More people should help and also Search the forum for this topic...

if you're in 4wd (really) and the light does not work it could be the bulb in the dash and/or the switch on the transfer case. I replaced the switch in my 98 about 2 years ago....prob solved.

This morning before leaving for work I started my 97 cherokee and engaged my 4wd and noticed that the 4wd indicator light on my instrument panel had in fact lit up.
I disengaged and re-engaged the 4wd system several times and the indicator light stayed on, but when I got to work and engaged the 4wd it would not come on. The 4wd will engaged without this light, I just try to keep my 97 cherokee in tip top shape. This is light is driving me nuts. Thanks for the help.

Hi Johnswann
I finally got underneath my cherokee today to find the switch that you told me to check for to help eliminate my instrument light problem. I found this switch at the top of the transfer case (NP231) and had a friend help me out. I had him engage the 4wd and the light in question came on, I then disconnected the switch and the light went out. I reconnected the switch and the light went on, I then took it for a ride and when I returned and engaged the 4wd the light did not come on, so I guess the switch is bad. Is this part a dealer item and what is it called. Also Thank You so very much for helping me out I really appreciate it,
hope I can return the favor.

Thanks again

Glad to be of help-that's why we have this forum...I called it a "four wheel drive indicator light switch" when I got mine from the dealer. I couldn't tell you if it is available aftermarket. Might try the net. From what I remember, it wasn't terribly expensive.
