Most likely has the least desirable transmission ever found in a Jeep- the Peugot BA-10. The x-case behind it will have a 21-spline input shaft and will not bolt right up to later transmissions without swapping in a 23-spline input shaft.

BA-10s are super-easy to spot. Take a look under the Jeep, and if you see a seam running lenghtwise down the bottom of the tranny... you've found it.

On a more positive note: BA-10s can hold up decently for daily-driving duties. The BA-10 in my Comanche has 117k miles on it and has not given me any problems. I got the Jeep with 106k miles on it, so there is always the possibility it's been replaced, rebuilt, or at least had the (PITA internal) clutch slave cylinder replaced once in it's life....

I am serious. If I'd know that before I got my first Jeep, an '89 Wrangler with 86k miles, I'd have gotten something else! The BA-10 went out on me after about a year of 4-wheeling a stock Wrangler with 31" mud tires. The Wrangler hadn't seen much 4x4 use before I bought it, and the transmission had already been rebuilt once.

On the up side it gave me good reason to convert to a TF-727 in the Wrangler, which is virtually bullet-proof.

Help me guys. I have Both a 89yj and a 89Cherokee,

The YJ has a 4 banger with a 3 1/2 lift and new BFG m/T
The Cherokee has a 6 cylinder AUTO, no lift.

I want one good off road vehicle, not two no so good off road vehicles. So wich one do I use for parts and wich one do I build up?

well yer on the mid size board so obviously the majority is gonna say the cherokee, lol

i say the cherokee just becuase i like em more , i plan on buildin a short wheel base too but i went with the cherokee first

although i cant stand an auto , so if i were you and the 4 abnger had a manual id build that just becuase i just dont like autos in most cases

I'd say build the YJ. It's got a nice solid frame that you can weld junk too. You can fit 31" tires without lifting it. Axle-swaps are easier with leaf-springs. You can roll the rig and total the body, and then just replace the body instead of starting over with a new Jeep.

There are a couple ARCA competitors running 4-cyl Wranglers. You might want to see what they've done to compensate.

That XJ'll make a much better tow-vehichle than the YJ would....

This is my 2cts worth 89 comanche 4.0 original owner from most post that i have gone through bash the phoo-joe for its weak performance that's y they had a short life in all the jeep lines and the cost for of having two different spline's for the t/c it was probably cheaper to have one. now my tranny is on the B/A-10 kind give yup without trying
but cannot not say that for this one i have haul logs/ rocks/boats/campers all over VA and it held its own. now there are some ax-15 and nv-3550(from the nv3500 family) and have not heard any complaints from these type. and i'm still on the b/a-10 i will switch but don't have any data points on the nv3550. to ans your question its all on how the previous owner kept up with it. and based on your use it should work out okay but keep in mind should you upgrade/increase power a change may be needed
