I've got a 91 4.0 that I went thru completely. Do you have the I-6 with multi port injection? Tell ya what I did to mine. Bored it .060, (it took that to clean up #1) crank at .010 and .010 under, stock cam and lifters, standard valve job, Air Raid, 20lb Bosch injectors, 63mm bored TB, new distributor, new coil, new gibson headers, hi flow cat, flowmaster 40's, all new sensors, new fuel pump, new oil pump. She squalls. I don't know if this forum allows mention of other hot forums, but I'll give it a try. It's called North American X J Association, or NAXJA. If you've got an XJ, these guys can help you dial it in. I can't help but wonder if you nicked your CPS on installation. The older ones are analog. The new ones are digital. It should have come with a sliver of paper on the sensor section. The paper keeps the clearance right. It disappears once you fire her up. The CPS is a royal bitch to replace with the engine in the hole. Extreme care is needed. Another thought. You replaced the distributor. Did you have a manual? They need to be cocked so they will line up with the cam drive gear. Did you have #1 at TDC? Where was you rotor button pointing? At #1? How many miles on your motor? Timing chain fried? Skipped a link? What's your compression? Food for thought. KR

I had an '89 that wouldn't start, too. I tried all the usual things as you have. FinallyI got to the real troubleshooting and found that the wire on the electronic ignition unit that's supposed to be hot - wasn't. I installed a jumper wire instead of tearing the wire loom apart to find the trouble. Runs fine ever since... Good luck!!
