How close is the 79 cj7 to the 83 cj7 as far as parts go? I have an opportunity to get a 79 for free, and I need some parts for my 83.
Also anyone have a wiring diagram for the 83? Or a nutter bypass picture? the link to 4x4 offroad has been deleted.

one's widetrack, one's narrow track. hubs are different but can be swapped; the 79 are better. frame and rest of the drivetrain should be same. 79 used a dana 20 tcase, 83 used a 300. 79 might even have quadratrac. if you don't have hard doors, the bodies are interchangable. the 79 has weaker reinforcing for the top of the door opening. sounds like a good acquisition. i'd like a second one to keep mine in parts.

We have a '78 CJ7 & an '85 CJ7. The 78 is the narrow track, has 6 bolt hubs in the front vs. the 5 bolt hubs on the '85 (less durable)
The '78 has a 20 transfer case, the '85 has a 300. Our '78 had 3:54 gears -w- trac loc standard, the '85 came with 2:73's, but, it was
available that year with 3:54's. A noticiable difference is that the front shock mount on the '85 is much longer & sits much higher than
the '78, so the frame would not be interchangable unless you got new shocks (which if you were swapping a frame would be a small cost compared to all the other sh** that you'd end up buying). The '78 has a 304, the '85 has the 258, but thats just 'cause they didn't offer the 304 in '85.
The '85 had different door closer hinges, they are better, we had to change the ones in the '78 to the new style. The dash & interior are
the same. The '85 has a computer, the '78 does not. (I don't know if it ever did, or if it was removed). Overall, you will find many cosmetic
parts that are interchangable, but if you are looking for engine/drivetrain matches, you really need to see what is on the '79 & see if the model number matches your '83. Good Luck

I wouldn't waste my time with the '83. It really isn't worth the hassle. Just tell me where it is and I'll take care of it for you.
