8274 leaking - Disassembly?

I just bought a slightly used Warn 8274. I got a good deal on it and it works perfectly. However, it's leaking at the seal where the drum
comes out of the gear case. How hard is it to take it apart so that I can replace the leaking seal?

It hasn't been used in 10 years and I'm sure that the seal is just old and hard.

Thanks for any help!

the 8274 is very easy to work on. you will want a pn 8680 bottom end kit, and while you are in there i would also put in a pn 8409 brake service kit. the winch only uses 6oz of 30wt oil(this could also be your leak as most people overfill them) and a little grease on the pawl. you will not find a better winch IMO.

Check out http://www.dsiwarn.com. They carry parts for Warn winches and have exploded view diagrams of your winch. All that you need is the serial number from your winch so that you get the right diagram and part number.

Thanks for the replies.

I have the diagram in the owner's manual and I printed out the one from DSI. what I'm wondering is how do I get the spool off so that I can
pull the seal.

Also, the previous owner seems to have put ATF in it. I thought (and Dan said) that it took 30wt.

Thanks again.
