I remember when I was test-driving my Cj my buddy and I were used to the wranglers and D300's (as well as electronic shift, but that's another beast).. We couldn't get the damned thing out of 4lo... we went back over to the mechanic and he told us to back up 10ft. it slid right out...
the t-case was in a mild bind and the gears wouldn't release each other... if that's not it, are you SURE the linkage isn't loose somewhere? I was chasing a loose connection for a long time, and it turned out to be the most accessable bolt the whole time.. I just couldn't see that it was the one that was sloppy with the t-case in the jeep! /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif oh well...
Sorry if you already knew all that.
