I just rebuilt the carb which went well and every thing seemed in rather good shape except for the throttle body insulator. The pipe that connects to the EGR valve was comepletely clogged. I took off the EGR assembly and it was completely clogged too. I have now come to the exhaust gas cooler cast into rear of the cylinder head which is also clogged. I have no idea how to get in there to clean out the chambers without damaging anything. I also can not tell how complicated the cast part is as it is to the rear (towards the cab) of the engine and can't get a good look.

Has anyone had this problem before? The other parts I could clean with a stiff piece of wire and a small wire brush.....

After taking another look....

Well, it seems that you can remove the exhaust cooling system at the back of the engine, seems to be 4 bolts... but may have to lift the engine out to get at them!

A side note here: I can highly recomend the old clymer's manual for repair, and I can NOT recomend the chiltens... I got the old Clymer one off e-bay published in '78 and it has been invaluable. It seems the newer ones are for people who look at the book and then take their vehicle to the mechanic in the end anyways.
