\'74 CJ5 Lift ??

Well, I'm about to put a lift on the CJ. I'm looking to see what people are running on the older 5's before I put out my money. I did a search and found very little on the older jeeps and the kits that look good are not made for the earlier models. Any suggestions? I am looking for a 4" lift that will accomodate 33" tires. Looking for a complete kit that includes most everything I'll need.

Re: \'74 CJ5 Lift ??

The only 3-4" lifts I`ve seen available lately for older CJ`s are a 3" Black Diamond kit offererd by Quaratec and a 3 1/2-4" Skyjacker kit from 4WD Hardware. Both are listed in their current catalogs. I`ve never run or personally seen anything more than a 2 1/2 lift on an earlier CJ5, so I can`t comment from personal expierence. I had recently been looking into a 3-4" lift for my `72. I`ve heard nothing but negative comment`s about that much lift on a sprung under CJ5. The only positive I`ve found are the 3" long leaf`s offered by Holbrook, and with them your still only talking about a 2 1/2 realistic lift, but with great articulation. The last time I checked though, They wanted $600.00 for the spring`s alone. I`m convinced that even though it may cost alittle more in the begining, going spring over is a more cost effective approach to lifting a jeep and ending up with good flexability.

Ed,
There's an early CJ board there somewhere (used to visit when I had the oddfire V6 in my '67jeepster). They may be able to give you some insight into lifts on the older stuff.

All the CJs I know of with lifts use those skinny front leafs and usually get mangled up pretty bad (Aaron's haven't faired too well).

Re: \'74 CJ5 Lift ??

I ran 33s with a Rancho 2.5" lift, 1/2" lift shackles and some minor fender trimming on my '75 CJ-5 and it was fine.
Due to the narrow springs, a taller lift will result in severe wandering. Ungodly driveshaft vibration is another result.

Ed, you've seen my Jeep. I'm running a 4" skyjacker, w/ 33 12.5's.
It was an all inclusive kit, and I really like the ride.
We have the same frame, so the kit should be the same.
