\'68 jeepster truck?

Just bought a '68 jeepster commando and would like to know if I'm right. It looks like the '67 truck. But I find nothing on a truck made in '68. Was the truck only made in '67? or did they make them in other years as well.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

If it has the half cab, well, it is a truck. You can put a half cab on any of the years, so someone might have just modified it. Not shure id there was one produced in 68, so so answer there. Gamebirds? Everyone has the most common interests when it comes to Jeepsters! Shoot, I am itching to get into a mess of phesants and line them up on the hood of old Hurc(my Jeepster, long story, abrievataed name) Good luck on the quest for an answer, good journeys, and welcome to the forum!

O.k. So now I know tops are interchangeable. I guess I should have given a better description of mine. It has the half cab. Only a two seater. Has the back wall with a slat just behind the seats. And thanks for calling me common. around my daborhood I'm know as the guy that just bought a trailer full of junk.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

Hi,

There were 1,713 Half Cabs made in 1968. Model number for one is 8705H. Came as a trailer of parts? Well.. it just takes Time, Money, and giving up a little sanity. Good Luck!!!!

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

It came into the yard on a trailer. It's all in one pice ( well mostly one) It's been setting in a guys drive way for about 15 years. Also picked up a '68 conv. body as well. Less rust on that on then the truck. But I think I like the truck better. More work to fix it but the the heck all I get is time right? oh hay the model number on mine starts out with the 8705 but has the f in h same dif. I hope.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

Hey,
The F instead of the H means that someone took the station wagon top off and converted it to a Half Cab.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

Thanks all for your help. Now I know my Jeepster is a sta. wgn. not the truck I'd hopped for. But it's still a jeepster and that's all that matters at this point.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

o.k. after looking over the Jeepster I have found that it is indeed a truck with the wrong serial # plate. It seems that at some point in the commando's life some one took off it's old plate and screwed a different one onto it. So now I have a commando truck that is titled wrong. I even tried to track the serial # down to see if it was junked or stolen but had no luck because of the age of it. Is this a common thing to do when restoring a jeepster to take on plate off to replace another?

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

Paul,
What a Bummer! I had a Harley like that once. It all got straightened out, but it took a long time, filling out papers and jumping through hoops. Changing numbers is not a common pratice, in fact it is illegal. Good Luck!

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

Are you sure someone didn't just change the top? Many times a good body is available and is swapped onto an existing titled chasssis. In order to maintain identity the serial number plate is moved from the old body to the new. In taking apart four Commandos, it is the only place I have found a serial number. If you currently have it titled under that number you don't have a problem. If you tell your DMV that the plate you have doesn't match the vehicle you will have a problem. Unless you intend to totally restore and enter in shows don't worry about it. "Don't ask -Don't tell" policy also applies to Jeepsters.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

yep I'm 99% sure. the jeepster has a back wall on a slant just behind the seats. In all the ads I saw for the jeepster Commando trucks it's the same. The plate is just being held in place with four screws. Checked the other body I have and it's got rivets holding it in place. I just liked the thought of having a truck ( don't see many of them in this area) Think I'll live but won't be as happy. But then again I do have a Commando righ?!

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

The serial number is also supposed to be on top of the frame just in front of the passenger side door. However when I took mine apart it was not there, but farther forward. The serial number on my frame is about 3-4 inches behind the front shock mount on the passenger side, on the top side of the frame. It doesn't have the complete VIN number just the serial number for that vehicle.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

Paul,

Maybe I misunderstood you. When you said Mistitled, I assumed that the title Vin and the Plate Vin did not match. As long as they match there are no problems. The older Commandos had the Vin plate just screwed on. My 67 is, My 69s are, my 70 is riveted. So I'm assuming they made a change to stop easy swaps.( boy assuming can get me in trouble) Carey is right, the frame is also stamped with the last 5 numbers of your Vin, somewhere in the area he discribed.

Re: \'68 jeepster truck?

After talking to some guys at the junk yard I found out that a lot of the early jeepsters and jeeps came with the plates screwed on. for what reason I don't know. Found that the body in the back yard as well is screwed on. So I'm guessing it's no big thing. Just didn't want to have big problems latter with it. Now for the fun....restoring the mess. Was cleaning out the 15+ years of junk in the cab when I went to move the seat up to get behind it. The seat did move but I don't think falling out counts as a good thing. I might be wrong. Looks like I'm off to sheet metal city.
