4X4 shifter

I recently bought an '85 CJ7 and when I shift into four high, the shifter barely moves and won't go any farther. The 4X4 light comes on but sometimes blinks. When I shift through to four low, everything seems to be normal. Do you suppose something is wrong? And if so, could it be because of the three inch body lift. The preveious owner said he only had it in 4X4 one time in the four years he owned it.

Yep, the body lift is most likely causing your shifter to hit the tunnel cover befor you fully engage 4 hi. Pull up you carpeting and take a look. It will be an easy fix, just enlarge the opening in the tunnel cover. BTW, get rid of that 3" body lift, IMO that's too much for a CJ, get a susp. lift. 1-2" at most on the body

Most of the time a 3" body lift will interfer with a throw on your trasnfer case shifter causing it not to be able to go into either 4 hi or 4 low. It is probably hitting the body tub and keeping it from locking completely into gear. Just unbolt the shifter boot and trim some of the metal away on the tub with a pair of hand shiers to get a better throw for your shifting lever.
