4.0L np 242 t-case

When I pull the lever into full time 4x4 nothing seems to happen, same with part time and 4 lo. The indicator light on the dash does not come on. How can I tell if it is just the indicator or if 4x4 is not working?

Thanks for any input

If im not mistaken (which is possible), if its a 242 from the factory then it wont have the vac-disco axle. I believe all NP/NV242's had the non-disco axle...

As far as your problem, I cant help much. I myself am dealing with a toasted np242 and am getting ready for a 231 swap. Let us know what/if you find the problem.

Quickest and easiest way to check if it is the indicator light or if you have a problem elswhere would be to have yourself or someone else stand outside the vehicle and watch to see if one of the front wheels spins when you hammer it on a slippery surface, ie loose gravel or snow and ice.

Thats what I was thinking to do originally (spin the tires on loose surface). Will 4wd engage right away when I shift it (assuming it works right) or should I expect to have to travel a short distance before it engages? the reason I ask is because it always seems to need to roll a little bit to disengage. I like the idea about jacking it up in the rear also
but the only jack I have that will lift it is my hi-lift- could be dangerous, I've had it tip when on the hilift once before. oops. anyways thanks for the suggestions and i'll let you know what I find.

4x4 does work
. I put it in 4x4 full time and did some circles in a parking lot and it bounced all over. So now the problem is something with the indicator lights. Any ideas on where to look/what to check? I dont think it is bulbs because there are 4 or 5 different ones and I doubt they would all quit at once.

Thanks for the advice.
