Well, I've got my trans/t-case in, skidplate up, and now the 44 is in, spring perches welded and all, snugged down with u-bolts/homemade spring plates.

i've got some questions now. I was told these 44's are out of a scout - but i'm a little confused... my new rear end is 3" narrower than my 35... I didn't know there were any 44's that are actually narrower than a 35... My question, when I go to the parts store to buy new brake hardware & wheel cylinders for my rear end, what vehicle do I need to ask for? Is there a way to ID this axle for certain?

TIA,
pablo

I got this from a post Sycho15 did a while back:
In reply to:

Scout axles: ~57" (?)
Narrow-Trac Full-Size Jeep axles: ~60"
Wide-Track Full-Size Jeep axles: ~65"
Non-Jeep Full-Size Truck axles: ~70"

So yep, 3" sounds about right. If it's a 57" 44 with 5 on 5.5 bolt pattern, I'd say definitly Scout. FYI, I think factory narrow track axles (also some D44's) were about 53" or 54"

Get the Bill of Material number and call Dana. They'll be able to tell you their build date and what vehicle it was made for but not the year vehicle it was going into.

What do your hubs look like? Are they external like a cj or internal like a waggy/ ford/ chevy axle? If they are external then they are almost 100% scout axles if they are dana 44's. And scout axles are about 3" narrower than stock yj axles, better get some wheels with almost no back spacing or you might have some issues rubbing on your frame and wheel wells.

Right - my wheels that i bought are 4" backspacing, i think i should be able to run 33's with no rub at all. They have external hubs on the front. The question remains, are all scout 44's the same, brake parts-wise?

Maybe I'm missing something.......
I thought scouts were wider than any swb jeep axles. I know they are a good bit wider than cj widetracs. The measurements that were posted above said that a scout was 3" shorter than a narrowtrac out of a FULLSIZE jeep truck, not a swb jeep. And yours is 3" shorter than a yj 35.

I don't have a 35 to measure or compare with my scouts in the garage.

I'm guessing that your rear 44 is out of an early 70 cj or dj. Thats about the only shorter one that I know of.

Let us know what you find out. You have got me wondering too.

the scout 44 I just put in back of my cj in place of my narrow track 20 is quite a few inches wider. I can't remember exactly, but I want to say 6" or so. The front I have all ready to slap in there, and I think its about the same difference in width as well compared to a stock SWB narrow track dana 30.

Right, but even wide-trac cj axles arent' as wide as a YJ 35, right? So it still makes the scout axles smaller than a YJ. i'll try and get some pics for you guys tommorow.

YJ/ tj stock axles are ~60" wide along with waggy axles.
My 8.8 was around 58 and i didn't have any problems with the narrower rear. If it was much narrower i would have rubbed on the rear wheel wells.

The YJ uses unit bearings in the front which puts the wheel mounting surface farther out than on an axle with a spindle. They also use wheels with more backspacing to center the wheel on the bearings. That is why the YJ appears to have a wider axle. If you take into account the stock wheel backspacing on a YJ and scout/waggy/CJ etc. they are closer. When using the same wheel on each, the differences show up more.

Scouts and the older Waggys are both 2" wider in the front than the rear.

Scout rears are about 57 - 58" wide depending on the year. Older ones are a little narrower, even though the books say they are the same. They YJ axles are about 59-60" wide. So a Scout rear would be 3" narrower.

For the brakes, the older scouts had smaller 1 3/4" brakes.

The newer ones are either 2 1/4 or 2 1/2 (I forget which but can measure later if needed)
So it depends on what year you got.

If you are stuck with the narrow brakes, you can use Ford Dana44 backing plates and the Scout drums and run the wider brakes.

The big Scout brakes and the D44 Ford brakes will interchange.

For the front, Pre 74 Scouts were a mixed bag. 74 - 80 all use the same hubs and rotors. Calipers were for the most part Ford "style". But not sure if they were actually Ford calipers.

ID Tip. Late Scouts (Scout II) had 8 bolts holding the spindle to the knuckle.

HTH,
