I have a chance to get a 1979 F150 with 400/NP435/NP205/dana44/Ford 9" for $1100. The engine has about 150,000 miles and may need a rebuild, does anyone know what kind of milage I can expect?

Depending on gear ratio say 8 to 11.IF you want less weight, more power, and better mileage junk the 400 and get a complete 460.It's a virtual bolt in. All you need is mounts, different oil pan and pick-up tube, and flywheel. If you have the 460 mounts a little rigging and you can make them work by modifying car mounts with the ones from the 400.

The 400 is the only weak link in that setup. The 205 and 9" are some of the best materials Ford's ever worked with. In fact, those two pieces and the fact that it's a straight axle makes up the cost of the truck, in my opinion. Anyway, I agree with Tisfor with the mileage, and the superiority of the 460.

Milage? sh!tty. I have a 351M, basicly the same, and i get 7. I know a lot of guys that have the 400 or 351, and they all get like 7-9 mpg. But the upside is there is a lot of hidden power in that moter. A new cam, intake, carb, and exhaust, and you got 325-350 real horsepower. Thats a lot, regardless of what other people will tell you. It's an abosutley kickass engine for wheelin. Hellava deal for $1100! Slap some tires on it and tear it up!

I've got the 400 in a '78 bronco with a C6 and an np205 with 4:10 gears. I got 10 mph with a tired stock motor and am getting 12 with a new motor and an RV cam. Otherwise it's still bone stock. Go to the table of contents and find the article on this website on the 351/400m motors. They really get a bad rap and can make a lot of power with not too much work. However, they are heavier than the 460 and the 460 will make more power if that's what you are after. My experience is you'll get better milage with a properly built 400.

Good luck

You dais you engine was stock except for cam? Just curious to see what you have. Mine has less than 20k on it with edelbrock performer cam, performer intake, 600 cfm 1406 carb, headers, duals with no cats, C6, and 350 ring and pinions with 33 inch tires. Figure this setup would get me good milage- HA. yeah right. any sugestions to increase my numbers? Hauls a$$, but when the speedo is racing to the right, the fuel gauge is racing to the left almost as fast.

Just for the record, my '97 F-250HD, Super Cab, 4X4, 460 with 3:55's, Flowmaster cat-back and K&N, with a canopy will get an honest 13 mpg and maybe a nudge more when driven empty on the highway. I'm told that's pretty good for a 460. Given those facts, figure how long it would take to pay for a 460 conversion based on gas mileage alone. BTW, I also have EFI and a four speed auto.

To swap in a EFI engine in an old truck's gonna cost some money. And your E4OD trans will cost around $2500. That buys a LOT of fuel.

Re: EFI swap

I got a good used engine, the computer, the Y-pipe (yes, the late straight 6 has a Y), all the wiring harness, all the accessories, the air filter box, a new belt, new spark plugs, new oil & filter, and the gas tank with pump & lines for a grand total of $1300. When I had collected all the parts, it took about 4 days (alone) from turning the 300 off to test-driving the 4.9L. Best money I ever spent.

Re: EFI swap

Steve, I was looking at your pics and I didn't realize you had a 75! Can I have it? If I don't end up getting that Kaiser I've had my eye on then I want to build up an early bronco...their styling is as good as, or better than, anything that rolled out of the factory in '01. What exactly did you swap into it?

It's a Jeep thing? My Bronco thing will run over your little Jeep thing.
