OK dumb response. What are you driving? Does it have manual hubs? If so are they locked in? Does it have vacumn front axle? If so is it working?
Banging in the back. shock ok? Have somebody bounce it up and down while you look for it

Oh fill out your BIO

If you have manual locking hubs you can do what I did: unlock your hubs and shift into four wheel drive. Have someone let off the clutch a little and watch to see if your front drive shaft turns. I guess this doesn't garentee that four wheel drive is being engaged, but at least you will know that power is being transfered to the frint axle. I'm a newbie so if this doesn't make sense feel free to tell me I'm a moron.

How about filling in a little bit of your profile. At least that way we will know what you drive and something about it. That will help us to answer the questions better.

No offence meant at all. But you gotta help us........so we can help you.

Not true. The front driveshaft will turn with the t-case n any position, even neutral. Put the t-case in 4WD, crawl under the Jeep and try to turn the front driveshaft with the front hubs unlocked. Shift the t-case into 2WD and try to turn the front shaft again. If it won't turn in 4WD and will turn in 2WD, it's pretty safe to assume the t-case is engaging 4WD.

from his previous posts, he has a 89 YJ.

he is probably suffering from the common front vacuum disconnect issue.

I know I went through that. it is just part of the YJ learning curve.

CJ7TAZ: If you hubs are unlocked and your transfercase is in two wheel drive, what would turn your front drive shaft? I'm sure your right, but I'm just trying to understand this.

The gear oil in the transfer case and the grease in the front hubs will try to turn the front drive train. The gear oil in the differential and the ball bearings in the differential and T-case output shaft will try to stop it.

It won't turn against significant resistance, but it will often turn enough to fool you into thinking that it's engaged.

What Jim said. ^

Transmissions and transfer cases have some or all gears that are constantly engaged. The gears are mounted on the output shafts with polished surfaces to allow them to turn independent of one another until a slider engages them. If there is nothing to keep the shaft from turning though, it will begin to rotate with the gears mounted on it because of friction and the adhesion of the gear lube. Generally, you could hold the front shaft by hand to keep it from turning, but when you let go, it will start turning again.

thanks for the help
it was a vacum line, i just put a new weber carb on and only hooked up the vacum advance and the brake booster. didnt know the front dif worked off of vacum
as for the clunking in the rear i still dont know what it is, tranny mounts are fine, springs are fine, shocks are new and not broken, but as i said when i hit a bump there is a heavy clunking from the right rear, im going to drop the gas tank and see if maybe on of the straps are broken but other than that i have no idea
all bushings are fine i just dont know

and i have a 89 yj 4.2

Check the clearance on your muffler and tailpipe and make sure all of the straps/brackets are tightly in place. Give your tailpipe a good side to side pull to see how much sway it has to it. Mine used to "clunk" when one of the brackets holding the tailpipe rusted off, but wasn't noticeable until you looked under the Jeep.
