4-to-1 track record?

I've heard that the 4-to-1 kit for the Dana 300 t-case had some problems and that these problems have supposedly been fixed. How about the 4-to-1 kit for the Jeep YJ NP231 t-case? Have people had problems with it or has it proven to be durable?

My advice, stay away from the 4 - 1 kit for the NP231. A fellow club member had his handgernade twice this last spring. Once in
March and then again in June. He switched to an Atlas and is very happy. The problem with the 4 - 1 is the small gears in the planetary
set.

Please tell me the following about your fellow club member's rig:

(1) Engine size/torque?

(2) Transmission type/first gear ratio?

(3) Axle gear ratio?

(4) Tire size?

(5) Driving style? (eg. uses lots of throttle, takes on near-impossible obstacles, etc.)

Thanks. I'm just trying to get a feel for all the parameters in the equation leading to the 4-to-1 exploding. (Obviously, if he/she has got a lead foot powering a torque-monster motor turning huge tires through a low transmission gear ratio and high axle gear ratio, then there's gonna be a lot of torque applied through the t-case and I probably don't have to worry. If he/she is conservative and runs mostly stock equipment, then I should be concerned.)

The following are his vehicle stats: Stock 4.0L I-6, stock AX-15 tranny, SOA, 33 x 12.50 BFG MT's, 4.10:1 diff. gears, fairly easy on the gas,
doesn't attempt obstacles that most other vehicles with stock 231 xfercases can't do.

One thing to keep in mind Roger is that some of the older 4:1 kits were just that. Planetary gears that replaced the stock unit. This led to some early failures. After they started using a new front case half that was much stronger. This may be a problem with the previous reply.

One very important thing to keep in mind is the control you gain by going much slower. I seem to be able to do much more by going slower. The increased torque also equates to less gas needed on many obstacles. Of course this is all coming from a person with a 4 cyl. and stock axles. My axleshafts break before the Transfer case.

Cheep, the Jeep I'm talking about did have the latest kit from Teralow. It was installed Feb. 99, broke Mar. 99, fixed under warranty,
broke again June 99. I don't know about other peoples experiences, but this is what I've seen.
