360ci, 33\" tires. what gears?????

ok i have a 304 now but up grading to a 360 in a month.
i'm batteling with what gears i should get with my new axles. i have 3.07s now. mesured my tires to be 29 inches and i have .86 over drive. i can just keep my jeep at 80mph in 5th gear now.(almost floored) and it is at about 2400 rpms

my question is. will i have a useable 5th gear if i go up to 3.31s and up to 33" tires (they useally mesure 32")

so i did some math calculations and i figure i will be at just about 2400 rpms at 80 mph. i dont have enough experience to tell me if thats good. will i have enough torque and not have to floor it to keep it at 80? it will almost be the same rpms at the little tires and the 3.07s will the 360 give me enough torque to not have to have it at 90% throttle to keep me at 80. mostly stock 360. 2brl carp but very free flow exause. for higher rpm horse's and GAS MILEAGE

or would 3.54 gears be best. 2557 rpms at 80 with the mesured 32" tires. keep in mind what a safe crusing rpm is for an amc 360. i'm taking my jeep on a tour de amarica in july. so need some highway-ability. total miles driven around 8,000 most of which will be at 75-80 mph.

one more thing. i'm not rich i love jeeps i'm not going to buy a honda for the trip so please dont tell me to get a car. the is a multi purpose jeep. i will be wheeling with friends all over the country. i'm stoping at the place in PA(the private 4x4 trail thing near altoona) i'm doing some in NC and some in FL and some in TX.

I just did the 304-360 swap my self. I have 4.10 gears and 33 BFG MTs. I turn 3000 rpms at 70mph. You will have plenty motor for whatever gears you select.
3.54 gears would probably be better for 80+mph but you said that you have an overdrive so 4.10s should also work and would be more usable off road.

You might want to try either 3.55 or 3.73. I have 4.1, 33s and no overdrive and it's not a highway cruiser. I had 3.55 and it did the freeway no problem without an overdrive.

gear it deeper for the trail and pull a trailer with smaller tires ( for the trail) and the other stuff yo umost likely catn pacjk in a jeep.

then you get the crawl on the trail, and the taller tires give you the highway cruise ratio you need

80 in a CJ?

yeah i drive 80 all the time i white nuckle it some times but with my waggy axles and shackel revers it should make it easer. i dont like to crawl to much but i think i might get the tera low to help with the crawling.

ive got 4.56 gear sets, and I plan on 33- 35 inch tires, BUT Ill probably never go over 65, and that will be rare

3.54-3.73 with OD and no need to crawl is probably where the power band is

I run a fresh 360 with 33's and 3.54's. I have a 0.75 Warn OD and with that in, 1800 rpm's at 70 mph. On a LONG uphill on the highway, you may feel the engine working hard toward the end, but it still keeps things turning with no problems! I'd go 3.73 if you felt like it, but any higher and you'll be taching out I think. Go with 3.54's because they're easy to find - you can buy stock axles that are already set up correctly CHEAP! - Chuck

Am I the only one that thinks 80 mph is too fast to drive any Jeep? I just don't feel that that speed is safe or realistic in a CJ. Okay, let the flames begin.

why is it unsave. if you have every thing set up right it drives fine. i only have about a 3 inch lift.

I've gone 90 in my YJ with no trac or sway bars and it did just fine. Did 60 once in the Postal- now that was scary!

jeeps are fine for speeding, just as long as there are no MAJOR turns, i do 95 in my wrangler. my cj had a chevy 350 with 32s, speedometer was WAY off on that one, and i would still be going about 90 on it, so thats pretty well over 100 mph, i'll admit at times it was iffy, but the power was there, so why not??

i dont think my jeep would be safe above 90. i would have to put track bars, swaybars, stiff shocks. but i hope to get it set up correctly for the street and trail. i probably will have a front track bar. front swaybar with disconnects. i might make the the trackbar so that on piece fits inside the other and is connected with a pin. so i can pull the pin out for the trail so it will be able to slide in and out as the tires go up and down.
