350chevy conversion price and other questions.

Hi!! the 258 in my cj is getting pretty tired, and I am thinking about going for the 350 swap, but first I have a few questions. I would like to be able to keep my t999 tranny. does anyone make an adapter for this, and what is the price? I know motor mounts will need to be changed, are they all weld in or does anybody make bolt in ones? will driveshaft lengths need to be changed? the reason I ask about this is because I know where I can get a good running 350 for free!! thanks for the help, Ben

The adapter for a 350 to a t999 is $488.35 from advanced adapters. 4wd Hardware does sell bolt in engine motor mounts, but I prefer the weld in ones like MORE sells. Driveshaft lengths might need changed but if you use weld in engine mounts then you could possition the drivetran to where you can use the driveshafts you have.

even getting the 350 for free, it isnt worth the $$ for the adapter to the chrysler tranny..
$488 for an adapter...hmm thats an AMC 360 rebuild kit ($389) plus a hundred dollar core..

sell the 258 for anything, find a flywheel, and BOLT up an AMC 360 motor, just change one mount, use the same radiator, use the same ignition
just go all GM drivetrain, or go all AMC drivetrain, youll be better off long term..

Does anybody know if they make an adapter for the chevy tranny to my Dana 300,and how much that would cost? the only downfall here is that the tranny needs rebuilt. I am pretty sure it is a turbo 350. does this sound better than just swapping engines? by the way the rearend is a dana 44, so that should not be a problem. thanks again, Ben

there are adapters to bolt damn bear any 2 drivetrain things together
BUT, like Ive always said, if you need aftermarket adaters you probably arent choosing wisely..

An adapter for a th350 to a Dana 300 is over $500 so that is going to cost you more. If you want the cheapest swap then a 360 would be the cheapest. If you are a diehard Chevy fan like me then you have to decide how much you are willing to spend.

I've converted my CJ5 to a Chevy 350. I'll make a long story short, $3000. I did all the work myself! That's $3000 in parts! I replaced an Iron Duke (GM 151 4 cylinder). I destroyed the T-5 transmission in less than a week! Now I have a Ford T-18.

If your on a limited budget, I'd suggest a remanufactured engine (or often called a remanufacture long block). The remanufactured engine will have a warranty. Seems some warranties are better than other, as well as some remanufactured engines are better than others. It would be possible for an average do-it-yourself weekend mechanic to get a remanufactured engine installed over a long weekend. I would venture to say that only a few experienced engine swappers could get a CJ up and going with a Chevy 350 in just a long weekend.

Another point I'd like to make is parts availabiltiy. It's easier to get the correct part (the first trip) for a vehicle when the vehicle is all original. Make minor changes to straters, alternators, belts, hoses, and if nessessary, emission parts, it's seldom accomplished on the first trip. This is not fun, when the only all night parts store is more than 20 miles from the end of your favorite trail!

I'll add vehicle value, if it comes time to sell your CJ, the more original CJ's tend to sell faster, and very often at a better price.
