34x9.50 \"chainsaws\" on CJ5??!!

anyone ever ran the 34x9.50 swampers on their cj? i like skinny tires because dig down. i ran some skinny buckshot mudders on my full size chevy for awhile and loved them. anyway, any insight or advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks a mill in advance.

I don't run the tires, but as soon as i get some money I will be getting them. My buddy ran a pair of 900 x 16 Military tires and they measured out the same. He said they dug like crazy. I put them on my jeep for a weekend and loved the stance it gave the jeep. I run a 1963 CJ5.

that sounds perfect!! i too liked the military "ribbed" tires on the jeeps and thats why i like swampers. my CJ is just 2 years newer than yours, its a 65. thanks for your help!!

One of the guys I met in Poteau was running 9x34x16 super swampers. I asked him how they did and he said the only problem he has had is because of the narrow rim, the outside bead in the rim is narrow. He said it pops the bead when aired down easier than a wider rim.

I know lots of people that have run them on jeeps, all with positive results. SOme have gone larger and switched to Q78's, but a lot still run them. My personal observations are they are perfect for a lighter jeep, a heavier one would benefit more from the 33x12.5 Swampers.

i suppose that a cj5 is considered a "lighter" jeep. i should be fine. i hope those things dig to china. by the way, i am putting on a 4" lift. i suppose i wont have clearance problems. its only like a third of an inch taller than a 33. you guys agree??

Can't say anything about them on a Jeep, but that size swamper is the hot ticket for shallow mud drags. Most of the fastest trucks run those, or the skinny 38" boggers. I have them on the front of my racer, and boggers on the rear. Probably not the best for rocks though. We call 'em "pizza cutters"./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I ran Swamper 34X9.50 radials on my 74 CJ-5 for a couple years. They worked great, mud, rocks sand..everything. After a couple thousand miles they got pretty loud on the road, but that is unimportant to me. I would air down to about 9 PSI nad climb anything. Had about 4" of lift and didn't touch the springs at full crank to right or left.

I ran the 33x10.50 SX's for about a year and a half. I like them on a lot on almost all trails, but they didnt have enough contact area, on steep rock trails.

I have been running 34X9.50's on my YJ and have had no problems - I run them at 7-10psi on 15X7 AR767 wheels.

Sipe the center treads and they are as good as an all terrain on slick rock.

terrific!! ok, is the 7" wheel a must? i know it is probably recommended for airing down because of the bead but i already have a set of 15x8's on it now. would they work ok on the 8 inch wheel? i thought they would as long as i didnt get too crazy with the deflation. if not, it wouldnt be a problem to pick up some of those black "wagon type" wheels in a 15x7. thanks a lot for all the great reply's...you all are major help.

Actually all the people I know running them prefer a 6" wheel. If you can't find a 6" wheel, Suzuki Samurai's have a 5.5" wide rim that clears the disc brakes and they're common, fit right onto the Jeep. With an 8" wide rim, they'll blow off at low PSI, same with the 7" rim, so 6" is preferred, but hard to find.

what about stock jeep wheels like from a tj, yj, or cherokee or something. what width are those? is the offset correct? thanks!!

YJ and TJ wheels are the wrong bolt pattern - 5 on 4.5" vs 5 on 5.5" like the CJ, Samurai, and full size Ford. Black Eaton wheels (the RockCrawlers) you see advertised can be had in 15X6 with 3" of backspacing for about $40 a wheel. Like I said..I have ran the 15X7 American Racing 767's which have a bead lip on BOTH sides of the wheel as low as 7 psi and have never lost a bead.

The 34" TSL's have a pretty mean bid lip - taller than a lot of other tires.
