31\" on stock carrier or swing out carrier???

I'm using a 31" as a spare and now that I have my new tintop (it's unbelievably rust free) the last thing I want to do is ruin the rear door with a heavy tire. But the 31 doesn't seem too bad? Or is it? I can see a 33 destoying it as the Boggers I just got are heavy as hell compared to the 31 spare.
But for arguments sake, lets say I use a swing out tire carrier. Any idea how to make the hinge/pivot point? I've looked at many designs and just can't seem to figure out how some of them were done. ANyone?

Cheers!

I can't answer your question about the pivot point but I can assure you that a 31" tire will cause problems for your rear door hinges. Mine started to sag pretty bad after a couple of years. Also the sheetmetal close to where the hinges are has begun to tear on mine. HTH

Rockstomper, this is a modefied trailer spindle
For the do-it-yourselfer: tire carrier hinges that actually work!

Approximate dimensions: 8" long overall, 2.25" large OD, 1.25" small OD, roughly 4" long of weldable outer area, 3.75" long of small-OD post.

We start with a 1000-pound rated trailer spindle, add two Timken tapered roller bearings, a custom made-in-house outer sleeve, a seal, a cap, and make the whole thing greasable for long life. $45.00+sh

Thanks guys, looks good. I've already seen that article on ORB and it looked good but that hinge wasn't exactly what I wanted. Although, that one you have Scott, is! I sent you a PM.

Cheers,
Steve
