Re: 304/th400 auto doesnt move when in gear? ideas?
AT's don't often just decide not to work without warning. If the fluid level was low, or the filter clogging there would have been signs of the problem. The transmission would have been slipping. The pump normally does not die without warning, it dies in stages causing slipping shift problems, etc.
If the clutch disks/plates are worn then you'll have slippage before it dies all together.
Water in the transmission can loosen the glue on the friction plates and cause loss of hydraulic pressure... but this too gives waring signs of slippage.
When the AT dies like you describe, going from park through netural to Drive, the this possibly means a one of a couple of things. My suspision is one of the following has occured:
a. The low/reverse band has broken;
b. The low/reverse band adjusting mechanisim has backed out;
c. The low/reverse band has slipped off the adjustment bolt.
d. You've got a massive hydraulic valve plug in the valve body.
Get a manual and take a look at how the band adjustmens are made and at how the bands lay inside the transmission. Then drop the pan and see if everything looks like it does in the manual. This ain't rocket science, it's prue simple hydraulics and mechanics.
