Does anyone have, or know where to find a detailed description of parts needed and what the swap actually entales? I currently have a 302 and am seriously needing more power, I am debating on building a 351 or goin big with the 460, any opinions on either option would be much appreciated.

Well, from what I've gathered on this forum, the 460 will probably get equivalent gas mileage as a 351, will have tons more low end torque and power, and won't weigh enough more to matter. So 460 would probably be a better bet...and they're plentiful from what I hear too. You will need a different tranny or adapter plate, though.

Not Cheap to do the swap, but worth it! It will cost the same to rebuild a 302/351/460.

But you will need the following:
C-6 Big Block Automatic tranny - $600-900 rebuilt
Oil filter relocation kit #250 from L&L
Oil Pan kit $275 (includes pump )
L&L Headers $400
460 Mounts (L&L makes a lifetime mount)

I did the swap on my 1984 Bronco XLT, with all of L&L's parts it was a straight forward swap. Looks like the engine belongs.

I have some pictures so if your intereseted email me directly @ steve_uzi@yahoo.com

Re: 7.5L swap

I realilze you were asking Steve-Uzi, but I thought I'd pipe in at this point /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif:

I don't think it would be hard at all to swap one into your truck, especially if you get a '90 7.5L. If you have 2 fuel pumps, an engine as old as '87 should be a straight swap, but if you have the (better IMO) single-pump system, I'd advise '90-'91. Later trucks have a different engine compartment wiring harness (which is also better) so it would take considerably more work to rearrange the wiring. Mechanically, any '87-'97 7.5L should bolt in - I think your only concerns will be fuel lines (minor) and wiring (minor if you're experienced in rewiring or stick to your era - major otherwise).

JC What engine do you have now?

Re: 7.5L swap

Almost 100% yes - different computer. Ron-Bo might know for sure that your current computer would run a 7.5L if you had mentioned what your current engine IS!/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif (...and tranny.) But it would be a good idea to get the computer with the engine - you KNOW it will work. And even if you current one CAN, the original EEC (for the 7.5L) will probably run it better.

Re: 7.5L swap

I have a 5.0 with the piece of [censored] Mazda tranny (I bash them, but I've never had problems with either). If I do this, I will swap to a C-6 tranny. Will I have to relocate the trans crossmember? Seems like I will along with new driveshafts. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Re: 7.5L swap

Well... Gas milage... I would honestly love to be able to tell you that... but back in november (I am up in boston, work on my toys outdoors) during the break in of my 460, I toasted the Distriburter gear... and I just finished starting to unbolt the engine this past saturday, I plan on pulling the engine, haveing the guy who built it, inspect it, flush it... etc.. and then I will use CAM LUBE on the DIST. GEAR this time... huge rookie mistake I made when I just dipped it in 20w50 motor oil....

So, hopefully I will be firing that thing up in a few weeks and I will keep you posted.

Also, When I installed my 460 w/C-6 and NP208. I used the original x-member for the xfercase/tranny and my original driveshafts.

Re: 7.5L swap

I'm pretty sure the late-model (better-running, lower-mileage) 7.5L's are significantly different from the carbureted 460's. Especially the heads & timing chain cover. I had EXCELLENT luck with a complete, unopened junkyard engine, so that's what I always recommend - with a 7.5L, how much more performance do you need? Will it be worth the drop in reliability, driveability, & ease of maintenance?
