I just took delivery on my brand new 2000 Suburan 3/4 ton.
She's a beautiful beast!!! Vortec 6.0, 4L80E, A Huge single piece AL driveline,... It's a nice ride.

6 Quick QUESTIONS that has me scratching my head something awful!!!:
1) The exhaust system is wonderful up to the aft of the muffler! It's a true dual exhaust with twin CAT's going into one twin inlet/twin outlet HUGE muffler. Why in the world did GM invest all of that wonderful mandral bent sculpting , stainless tubes, twin CAT's,... the works!!! Only to ruin it with a single tail pipe?!!! It's the most bizarre set I've ever seen! It's like some Corp. YAHOO, decided (last minute) to make it single exhaust to make it look like everybody else! I mean for Crying out LOUD, there's a special 2 to 1 collector thingy on the aft end of my muffler to tune it down!!! Jeez!!!

2) How come I got a semi-floating rear end??? I thought I was suppose to get a Full-floater!!! Man, I'm pissed. Spend $40K only to get crappy components!!! (That's the reason I sacrificed the ride to get a 3/4 T,... to get away from that 8.5" - 10 bolt piece of hud!!!)

3) Looked on the "door tag" and found out this truck was made in MEXICO!!! NO offense, but how are the products coming out of that factory? VS. Texas? or Flint?

4) Is the 6.0 a good engine? I have no background on this set up?

5) What's that funky, turbine winny sound in first gear?

6) AM I really ready to load this sucker up with ALL my crap and trailer a 25" boat/twin bogie trailer behind it, like my old 454, TH400 w/ a full floater 11" ring?

It must be an EPA thing on the dual exhaust up to the muffler. The Vortec 5.7L motors are the same way. It does make it easier to go to true dual exhaust if you want since there's already two cats. I had no idea GM built Suburbans in Mexico; it kind of pisses me off since I can't pick on the Dodge guys anymore since their trucks are built down there!

you mean full floater with 10.5"ring. MExico!!!! hmmmmm thats unusual. I wouldnt get any vehicle from mexico, there gasoline sucks, Its like putting diesel in a gas engine. My dads 97K2500 truck was made here in the states. You better check up on that Mexico issue, do research on the net. Now, about the full floater, is this suburban a HD one? I dont think the new HD chasis has come out yet, those are for sure suppose to have the Full FLoater. About the exhaust, it could be just to get by emissions.

Alright boys, chill with the Mexico sucks stuff. My dad is a plant manager for GM down there, not at the truck plant but a different one. He actually drives a 2000 suburban made down there, I got to drive it and everything was fine. Also as far as the gas thing goes the gas that would be put in your 'burb is gas that GM brings in. Now do you honestly think they would but sh@tty gas in their brand new vehicles so people can complain. I doubt it.

Sorry it sorta pi$$ed me off with y'all bashin GM Mexico since my dad is down there bustin his a$$ for them as I type this.

For what it's worth guys, I have noticed a difference in build quality b/w US and Mexico built - particularly the paint quality (and its quick deterioration) and odd wiring harness problems. I even owned a recent Mexican-built Dodge Ram previous to my current one (which was built in MO). The US one has been flawless so far - unlike the Mexican version. Of course, my experience is based on Dodges - haven't owned/worked on enough newer GM vehicles to make a good comparison b/w those two.

My dad's got a '99 3/4 ton Silverado and it was built in Mexico (I'm pretty sure), but I don't have a US built Silverado to compare it to. Although my dad's has had lots of steering problems and other weird stuff go wrong (in only 15K miles), it wouldn't be fair to say the Mexican-built ones are worse without a US-built one to compare to.

Just my 2 cents.

The 9.5" Semi-float 14-bolt has been used in 8600 (and below) GVWR GM trucks for many years now. Surprised you hadn't heard about it before. FWIW, friends of mine who have this rear in their Sub's & 2500 Pickups, have had no trouble towing large loads reliably. And you also would have been saddled with the 5300/4L60E had you gotten a 1/2 ton. Don't worry 'bout towing your boat, but the Vortec 6000 (while a GREAT engine) will not tow as well as a later 454. The 2-into-1 exhaust allows low backpressure while still taking advantage of scavenging. It's possible that if you convert to true dual exhaust, you won't get better (or even as good) performance. It has nothing to do with emmissions IMO since an 8600 GVWR is emmissions exempt.

Not really. Not to offend anyone, but I wish I could get a non-union made vehicle. I have too many friends in the auto industry (it's REAL big around here) who tell me all kinds of horror stories about losers in the UAW who would have to probably kill someone in order to get fired. I was actually hired to work in the Dodge Ram plant, but turned it down after talking to the UAW rep. It was very clear that "quality of workmanship" was not a priority.

Full-floating rear axles are only available on 2500 series GMT800 (new body style Silverado's and Suburban's) with 5-speed manual transmissions. Since Subs are only available with an automatic and autocrap push button four wheel drive, no full-floater for you.

Believe it or not the best quality GM vehicles are manuafactured in Mexico and Canada. Most of the U.S union brothers are lazy and care less about their work.

Full-floaters will be standard equipment in 2500 series Suburbans with the new 8.1L big blocks once they are released. 8.1L's probably will not show up in Subs until late 2001 or 2002.

1991 was the last year manual transmissions (SM 465 4-speed)were available in the Suburban. The 1992 through 1999 body style never had a manual available for the U.S. market. Possibly for export.

1995 was the last year manual transmissions (New Venture 3500 5-speed) were available in the 2 door Tahoe/Yukon, it was never offered in the 4 door Tahoe/Yukon.

For the 2000 4x4 GM SUV's, you don't even get a choice of a lever or Autocrap push button 4x4, now they all come standard with autocrap.

I am a GM guy but, the new Tahoes and Suburbans look like they bounced off every ugly tree on the GM Design Center lot. They also kind of look like they were rearended by an Excursion at 75 mph.

Bounced off the ugly tree?! Oh man, you've GOT to be kidding! Just a matter of personal preference (obviously), but I think they're FAR & AWAY the best looking trucks on the road. Now, if you want to talk ugly about some of GM's recent car designs...............THAT's another story /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif.

I read where the 2500HD Sub won't be out 'til '02 & that the diesel version will be significantly detuned as the Allison won't be an option - they'll use 4L80E.

No offense bluthndr, but you can't judge Mexican built cars by two of them. Thats like asking two people if they like ford or chevy better and then assuming the entire U.S. feels the same way. Also, my dad works in the petroleum industry and they haul gas/oil/grease down to the Honda plant in Mexico. So if the gas and parts are coming from the U.S. there should be no difference. If I were Mexican I would be insulted by the fact anyone questioned Mexico's products aren't as good.

I agree with Tex. It's a matter of opinion about how good or bad these trucks look!

I personally think these are the BEST looking 'Burbans yet! And the most functional! The doors are huge, the handle are the most correct and I love how GM put the right amount of curves back into the sheet metal not to mention the huge wheelwells! And how about that new 40-20-40 front seat (which I opted in mine)! Man, what a great design! And the Spare under the rear bumper! Added space and a true floor pan for the 3rd row seat in the back!!!

I LOVE THIS TRUCK! A little $$$, but I LOVE THIS TRUCK!

Oh yah, try burying the trottle with the Tranny in tow/haul mode!
Man, this 6.0 hauls!!! I can't wait for the new AL heads due next year!

I usually see at least 1/2 a dozen transports passing the other way on the Interstate each morning loaded with Tahoes & Yukons. The Yukons in particular just make me drool all over the place. F-Superduties do nothing for me & actually look incomplete with that trim piece that runs the entire length of the cab, but doesn't go on the bed. The Excursion just looks clumsy (which it sounds like it is, based on the reviews) & after 6 years I still haven't quite gotten used to the Dodge.

It's all just personal opinion, but there are some designs I've just fallen in love with right away & some that really have to grow on you. The second-gen Ford Rangers really looked great right from the start (too bad they've screwed that up), so did the '88 Chevy full-size, & the '99 Silverado/Sierra. The '78 Bronco really looked great right off, but the '84 Toyota took a while for me to like (now I like it better than the '83, but it definitely "grew" on me). And even though I don't like the look on the Ram, I think the latest Dakota looks great & thought so right off.

And I still can't decide which Land Rover I like best, although I'd have to have a Euro version that wasn't offered over here if I had one - like the 90" pickup, or the 110" 2-door or pickup.

The ultimate truck...

The ultimate truck is either the Peterbilt 379 w/ dual S/S aircleaner and stack or the Kenworth W900L Studio Sleeper/ 74" BBC. Man, those drive and look nice! Esp. if you drive one with a 600hp/2050ft/lbs torque CAT 3406E, Fuller/Eaton 18-spd and Air-glide suspension, Cab supension and Inner-locking double boggies in the rear!

I just wanted to make a few comments concerning the dual vs. single exhaust issue.
1. Once the exhaust goes through the catalytic converters, there is no change in the amount of emissions it puts out.
2. Just because there are two pipes doesn't mean it flows better than a single pipe. I'm not sure, but I bet that the single rear tailpipe is a larger diameter than the dual pipes coming off the manifolds. When figuring out how much a pipe flows, you cannot say that (for example) dual 2" pipes flow as much as a single 4" pipe, it doesn't work that way. In reality, dual 2" pipes only have a combined flow area 6.3 square inches, while a single 4" pipe can flow over 12.5 square inches. The dual pipes also create a lot more air friction for the amount of flow. While the dual 2" pipes flow only half as much, they have the same amount of friction causing surface area as the 4" pipes which flow twice as much.

I agree with TEX... GM trucks are the only ones that I can truely say look GREAT off the line. I dont know what the hell ford is doing these days but there vehicles get uglier and uglier everytime one is built. Those new Explorers that are orange colored or I dont know what the heck they are, but I'd rather stare at my ass than one of those. DODGES.... SUCKKKKKKK. except, the DAKOTA has excellent potential, that little truck looks great!! to bad I dont like mopar, chrysler products. Now, Toyotas have always been OK, Nissans, ummmmmm NO! ZR2... awesome little trucks. 88-99 Z71's DAMN those trucks make me drulllllllll, cant wait till I get mine, hopefully this weekend.

I'm a GM man. Although personnally I prefer Chevy. I love how they continued the styling of the 88-98's but made it more "aerodynamic and smooth". I miss the 2 door Tahoes(they'll be Blazers forever to me) though. Guess I will just have to keep buying used Blazers/Tahoes. I like the Ford Superduties. They're just BIG, and they are pretty well equiped off the line. They're engines SUCK unless you get the INTERNATIONAL 7.3L diesel. I don't consider that a Ford engine since they're made by my favorite tractor company. The Rangers are kinda good looking. The F-150's and Expeditions suck. They're ugly, underpowered, built and designed by chimps, and did I mention ugly? "Look like they were designed by a girl who was trying to copy a Dodge Ram but doesn't know anything about cars or trucks", I was once told by a female friend. One day I want to get a 70's F-150, and build it up with all GM stuff. A 454/502, TH400/4L80, 14 Bolt FF, Dana 60, NP 205, etc. I like the Dodges, but they have their faults. I like Durangos and Dakotas a lot. We have them at Enterprise Rent A Car. The Durangos with the 360 can squeal the back tires like a muscle car. Not that I'd know or anything. Toyotas are cool too, but I hate the Tundras. Gimme a Truck or a old Land Cruiser any day. Nissans are okay, like the new Xterra. Mitsubishis are crap, enough said. Isuzu's is just an S-10, but they make great diesels. Mazda's are just Rangers. Land Rovers suck. One of the Enterprise Branches I work in is in a LandRover dealership. They fall apart so fast. We have some in our rental fleet to keep the Rover owners happy when their English made POC breaks again and they are too good to rent a Durango. You're lucky if you come out there with under a grand in repair work. Just my opinions.
