See if you can help. If I let my jeep sit over night or half a day, it will start just fine but about five seconds later the engine dies. If I give it gas just as its about to die it will keep running but roughly. If I let it die I have to crank it for about a minute while pumping on the gas. Is this a carb problem or something else? What I don't understand is how easily it starts and it starts out running smooth. Sometimes too the thing will idle down and die when I stop, but sometimes it idles okay. Any help is appreciated. Also the 258 is stock.

Hey Man,

Sounds like it is starving for fuel. Have you changed the fuel filter? Are the any crimps in the lines? I always try the Cheap stuff first.

I just put a new fuel filter on it, could it maybe be the pump going out?

Not sure, i dont know much about fuel pumps. Dont they just quit working rather than wear out?? I dunno

No, they can wear out by work-hardening & perforating the diaphragm. This usually means gas in the oil on mechanical pumps.... Pressure falls off, engine runs worse at heavy throttle.

As I incorrectly diagnosed a fuel injected engine as having carb problems, I'm keeping my mouth shut!

Sometimes in 5th gear if I'm wanting to accelerate the thing idles real rough and when I ease off it smooths back out.

The next time it does that, stop, open the hood, take off the air cleaner and look down the carb. First, move the throttle with your hand and verify that gas is sqirting down the throat. Additionally, the choke plate should be closed which means you will have to hold it open to see down.

If you have no gas then you have a leak in the carb. The gas is either siphoning back into the tank or is leaking down into the manifold. Check for cracked fuel lines between the carb and fuel pump. A small pin hole may not always leak gas but will let air in.

Make sure the choke is working correctly. There is a heater under the carb in the manifold that heats up on startup and help it run while cold. Make sure you have 12 vdc going to it. You can't miss it, its the big wire going to the bottom of the manifold. If there is no voltage, the relay for it is up in the fire wall, just right of the master cylinder.

You may also want to replace the fuel lines on the suction side of the pump. Sometimes they can leak and suck in air, especially in the back above the rear axle.

Sounds like a timing problem to me. Mine was doing the same thing. First check for any vacuum hoses that may be unhooked, then try checking your timing.

I thought about the timing too. I had it checked and the guy said it was okay.

also, make sure u have the fuel filter on the right way, i know theres a million vacuum lines and stuff and once i put mine on back wards well not really backwards, i put the hose that goes the carb on the nossle that goes to the fuel return, and in the morning it wouldn't start unless i put gas strait into the carb, and on the highway in 5th it would die, just make sure the filter is on right.It sounds stupid but when i put mine on in a hurry, it mad one terrible day of driving.
