A friend has a 92 G-Cherokee with a 249 t-case. It is locked in both high and low range. Does the chirp and all when turning. Burned the front axle beyond help in 50 miles.
Question: Does it have internals similar to the other t-cases Jeep uses. From his description it has no extra wires that would indicate a computer function. Sounds to be an internal problem. Does anyone have amanual on this one or know a link to it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The 249 has a viscus coupling that allows slipage for full time 4x4. When the coupling fails it starts to lock up but normally it fails slowly over time. The coupling is expensive to replace and hard to get. I replaced the whole t-case with a rebuilt unit fron Transfer Cases Unlimited (George, 631-226-1448) and it works great.

You can also get a 242 made with some 249 parts that will bolt into the Cherokees also. TCU makes these units and a large group of GC owners did a group buy with George last year. If you want some testimonials on George go to the older Grand Cherokee forums at jeepsunlimited.com and search for Transfer Cases Unlimited
