IS THERE AWAY I CAN TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A 232 AND 258 ENGINE BY LOOKING AT IT. THE JEEP I HAVE IS A 1981 CJ7 WITH A MOTOR FROM A 1977 CJ7 QUADRATRAC. I BELIEVE ALL THE QUADRATRACS CAME WITH A 232 ENGINE. CAN ANYONE ANSWER THIS QUESTION?

Welcome to the board, and PLEASE DON'T SHOUT!

There's a machined flat spot at the top of the block between and below #2 and #3 spark plug. In that flat spot is the year, month and day the engine was built, and a letter. If the letter is A the engine is a 258 1-barrel, B is a 258 2-barrel and E is a 232 1-barrel.

The first digit is 1 if the engine was built in '77, 2 if it was built in '78. Second and third digits are the month. Then comes the letter code followed by two digits for the day of the month.

Thanks, there was an A on the engine block. Sorry about the caps I need a new keyboard at work. It has been broke for a month.
