The switch itself works because the little light turns on and it turns itself off after the right amount of time, the rear window just doesn't defrost.

The rear dome light also doesn't turn on when I open the hatch but it will turn on if turn it on manually by pressing it. I'm wondering if there is a break in the wire somewhere?

Anybody else ever experience this problem??

Sounds more like the grid on the window might have a break. Check all the traces and verify the wire connectors on either side of the glass are actually still attached. The dome light issue is probably the switch at the latch and unrelated.

There are no breaks in the grid, I verified this by checking for continuity the connectors are fine as well. This is what leads me to believe that there is a break in the wire that comes out of the body and goes in to the top of the door. Seems a little premature though as the truck only has 100k kms on it. Where is the mercury switch located? I checked the defogger fuses as well. I haven't checked the relay but j have funny feeling that it's fine.

My rear dome light didn't work because of a broken wire somewhere past the left taillight, a fallen apart switch in the lock and the connector fallen off the switch.

Did you put a voltmeter on both connectors at the rear window? The relay is a good possibility, but just measuring will learn what is actually wrong.
