I just bought a 1998 Z71 Silverado Xcab. Can somebody PLEASE tell me what came with the Z71 option? All I can tell is skid plates and Bilstiens. I don't think the truck has a limited slip diff....was one available? I love the truck but I think my Jeep Cherokee Pioneer was better suited for off road. What gives??

Z-71 is an RPO code for an off-road suspension package. basically all you get is shocks, skid plates, and the stickers. thats it.
as for the limited slip rear end. checkthe glove box for an RPO code of G80. if you have that code you have the limited slip. technically its called the gov-lock, but it is often referred to as the gov-lick or grenade-lock. i had this option on my truck. it definately grenaded and took out my drivetrain. $6,000 later i am rolling again, but with a detroit locker. i like it much more.
now you say your pioneer was better suited off-road. depends on what you're doing. i had a copuple of cherokees myself. great little vehicles. rel;atively short wheel base. decent power....and tehy were light. now you havea truck that weighs nearly 6,000 pounds and has a wheel base of 141.5" its a different vehicle and you'll need to adjust your driving habbits accordingly.

Yeah, the Heep didn't haul dirt bikes as well as I wanted it too. I did buy a "Joe Hauler" from www.joehauler.com and it works bitchin !!! Anyway the old reliable jeep was a 1990 with 200K on the odo....she never left me stranded !! NOT ONCE !!! I'd buy another one if I could....and I didn't have to haul bikes around. It just struck me as odd that the Z71 was just as you described. Bummer. Oh well I do like her and I plan on keeping her for quite a while. "Hello ARB" you got any lockers????
Check to see if you have a 14bolt in the rear. A friend of mine has a 98 z71 with the towing package and he has a 14 bolt rear. It came stock. Check out my website, his is the white pickup with the flames. Dont ask, the flames came with the truck. They are also painted on.

Wassup with the 14bolt rear...are they good or bad or what ??
LMAO 14 bolt bad? nooo! that is goood! You see look under the back and count the bolts that hold the diff cover on, it will have 10, 12 or 14.... Well I think they put a 12 in there too maybe not. But anyhow a 10 bolt is a weak axle found on half tons, a 14 bolt is found on 3/4 and 1 tons. And is very beefy. I also belive they come stock with a G80.
The towing package does not include the 14 bolt. The high GVWR package is what you need to order to get the 14 bolt.
highbeam is correct. the camper special had them becasue it has a higher GVWR.
I’m getting ready to purchase a 1998 gmc 1500 z71. Does anyone have experience towing with these trucks? I have a small sawmill and I grab logs in my 10’ dump trailer. Normally, I tow about 5-6000 pounds( logs plus trailer weight). I’m just curious how they perform.
Thanks in advance

if you’re looking for towing I’d you can get the 5.7L Vortec small block it’s amazing for towing if it has that you shouldn’t have a problem I have a 98 Chevrolet K1500 with Z71 and hauled construction equipment with it and never had an issue so im sure you’ll be alright. Hope this helps
