I just bought this jeep and when i took it out for a test drive and had it for a few hours the meters worked fine. but i turned the car off and went to work and noticed they weren't working when i started it up... then the car idle for a bit and started working again... what could be the problem???

A bad or dirty connector or ground problem for the instrument cluster.

common problem in the 98s. NIX is right. Remove the cluster, clean the contacts, put a little bulb grease on the contacts and reassemble. You will be good until the next time.
If the job is a little overwhelming for you (it shouldn't be) or you can't get to it right away, just smack the dash above the cluster. That always works for me:D
