The bike will fire up and run about 15-20 seconds after kicking it over for a few minuetes with choke on then die will not run with choke off. It has been sitting for 8-10 years cleaned the carb and gas tank and added new fuel line, oil, gas, plug can anyone help? What should I set the pilot screw at to start? any and all help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah I cleaned out the carb a few times and its pretty clean... now. Ill have to try that setting and see what happens. Having a dead battery shouldnt affect its running right? my 78 DT400 worked fine without it hooked up so I hope its the same with the XT. Thanks for the help!

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!

YAY!!! the old yammy runs again!! thanks tcgeez for the carb setting it was about 2 1/2 turns total for it to idle without the choke. Ive never owned a 4stroke before and just wondering how loud the valves should be? I used 10W 30 Penzoil synthetic and i can hear them ticking away when its running but not that bad should i adjust them? or just leave it? Thanks for the help!

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!

that noise could also be the timing chain. it may have stretched. check the tension. if you end up with a loose timing chain, there is a timing chain adjuster. if its still too loose after you tighten it, get a new one. the timing chain is stretched. but its kind of tricky. you have to line up the marks on your timing gear right when you put everything back together. . im in the process of doing this same thing on a buddies xr250. still working on it. let me know what you find out.

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!

When i repainted the frame and engine i had the covers off and i was sure the chain was tight but how mush play is too much? im pretty sure it didnt have any more than 1/8th inch of play. are there tensioners? the bike has 14,685km on it but from how the inside of the engine looks it may have been rebuilt before. I have tracked down the owners back to the late eightys(stayed in one family) and no one has opened up the motor from then till i got it so i dont know and dont want to tear it apart to find out.

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!

im not 100% sure how much play it should have. im more of a 2 stroke guy. i just know what too much play and not enough is. im learning myself on my friends xr250. it may be your valves ticking. thats out of my league. sorry. if your not willing to open it up i would say bring it to a local bike shop and ask them for their 2 cents. or a saying i sometimes go by. ride it till it dies.

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!

"ride it till it dies"! reminds me of my DT 400
it used to rattle like a diesel the bearings were so worn out just add gas/oil and keep truckin! cant complain with a free bike
I would go to my dealer(yamaha!) and ask them but these guys are a bunch of idiots every time I need a part i go to yamahas webpage and get the part# first or those guys will never find it the yamaha dealer where i used to live was much better just describe a part and they could tell you the part#,price, availability and dimensions almost immediately. but might have to buy a manual on it and see....off to ebay!

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!

yeah man same here. im up in alaska and all the yamaha dealers around here arnt worth a damn. i order all of my factory OEM yamaha parts from North County Yamaha. www.ncyamaha.com those guys are the best. the lowest prices and the friendliest service.
yea ebay is awesome. lots of good parts i need to order a service manual for my yz. im trying to figure out how to take some small bearings out of my case. the crankshaft is in the way. im praying to the belray gods that i dont have to split my cases again. good luck with your yami

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!...nevermind

Well she started I drove it round the block a few times till rotten front tire gave out I parked it and now its back to its old tricks again fires once or twice when you kick it over and sometimes will run about 10-15sec then just cuts out like you hit the killswitch getting very agravated
bike ran and rode great with suprising power (though running a little rich) for a little bike. I turned it off and re-started it a few times before it was parked for the day. All grounds seem good so maby not electrical? might start parting it out if it gets me PI$$ED off enough! Please Help

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!...nevermind

my guess is that you have crap in your tank that keeps clogging your pilot jet. clean your carb again, and make sure that you can see light through your jets before you reassemble. put an inline fuel filter on after you flush your tank and petcock screen. good luck, T

Re: 1982 XT 125 runs!!!!...nevermind

actually think it might be electrical
it will fire a couple times when you kick it and eventually it warms up a little then it starts up and while its running if I listen by the bottom of the frame near the battery/airbox/voltage regulator I will hear a "click" then the engine stumbles or sometimes dies like you hit the kill switch it isnt a loud "click" but it is sharp if that makes any sense? the fuse hasn't blown on me but the battery is toast Ive been trying to find a 6volt battery or charger to hook up and see if it makes any difference but no one has one and I had to abandon my chargers when I moved
Any body know what a small(3x3x6) 6volt battery would cost? Thanks!
