10/12 bolt axle shaft

This question is for anyone who has broken an axle shaft in either a 10 or 12 bolt. First of all, does the outer axle bearing survive a broken shaft. The shafts are easy to change but the pressed in bearing could be a challenge to remove in the field without a puller, especially if it got mangled. Secondly, how hard is it to fish out the broken pieces, would a long magnet work okay?

The ones Ive seen broken are 10 bolts in drag racing. They usually shear close tothe spline. Its a matter of how quick you catch it as to if the bearing survives, and no you can't fish it out. Gotta pull the cover for the c-clip.
