Can somebody help me with a technical question please? I came across 6 Suzuki Swift GTI's at a local boneyard the other day. The engines are 1.3L 16 valve dual overhead cams with fuel injection. Will these motors bolt up to my 87 Samurai transmission without an adapter plate?

I live about 5 miles from the Cami plant in Ingersoll, Ontario. This is were they build the Tracker,Sidekicks and used to build Swifts and Esteems. Lots of Suzuki stuff in the local yards around here. I had a chance the other day but was short on cash to buy a reject Sidekick with 0 miles on it. Was a 97 with a bare shell but a never used 1.6L 16 valve Mikuni multiport injection motor with wiring harness less the ECM......Right time......Wrong bank accout balance.

Yes the Samurai transmission will bolt to the GT/GTi block, because it's the same 1298cc block as the Samurai's. However, getting the head to fit will be a pain in the ass because the straight-out distributor interferes with the firewall in the Samurai. Also the computer-controlled head is a pain unless you have all the wiring and intake tract hardware.

Here's the deal...

If the block is marked "G13A" on the "rear" of the block just above the flywheel housing "around the corner" from where the displacement is marked, then you have a compatible block.

Since the engine is transverse mounted on the Swift, you will need to find a Samurai head since the distributor on a Swift is in-line with the camshaft (or so I understand). This configuration will not work in the Sammy and I don't know if the 16-valve swift head will take the right-angle Sammy distributor.

This is for sure if it is a G13A block, it'll work in your Samurai!

Yeah but the DOHC and the 16 valves would be the cool part.
Otherwise you'd loose some ponies...wait a minute were talking Zooks here, we don't need no stinking Horsepower!

ths is a common swap out in B.C. yes it is a nightmare with the wiring and you do have to move the motor and tranny forward a bit so the distributor will clear the firewall but the final reward is a 100 stock horsepower that can rev over 8,000 rpm forged crank, forged rod's, and 10.5-1 flattop forged pistons it's a H.P. racing motor and if you talk to a Suzuki dealer they are never in for repare because thir bullit proof I would love a bottom end ........satchmo88 send me a private [email protected]

Also, you'll want to use a Samurai oil pan and pickup tube, since the motor will be sitting upright in the Samurai's engine bay, rather than tilted at an angle to fit under the Swift's hood. Make sure before you bolt the pan on that the crank clears the pickup tube support. I had to grind mine a bit to allow the crank to turn.

The distributor does not pose that great a problem. A local performance parts supplier here in Australia sells a right angle drive adaptor for the GTI motor into the Sierra. Sells for $100.00 USD and works great. You can mount the motor in the original position.

Here the site to view a preproduction model of the adaptor, the final version looks better than this.

Hey Blackzook1, is the production model available yet? I saw that on their website a few weeks ago, but said it wasn't available yet. Looks like something I could use. I just need to contact our Melbourne office, and have one of my Aussie mates to pick one up for me.

Another BC guy here.... it semms that 90% of lifted Samis have the GT swap in place. With a cams and chip package from SuziSport in Oz, you can easily hit 9000rpm on stock internals.
