Looking at Trackers, what should I look out for?

Going to start looking for a Tracker. Like the idea of 4x4 with a low range and upper 20's mpg.
What should I look out for to make sure I don't get a lemon or POS?
What are the known troubles?
I'm in Michigan if that matters any, rust is a bit of a problem on everything here.

Re: Looking at Trackers, what should I look out for?

I know the Sidekick '89 model first came with the 1.3 engine. Truly underpowered.
I don't know if the Tracker was around in 89.

I would try and stick with Fuel injection though. that would be from 91 on I think...

Calmini 5", 32" TSLs, daily driver, work in progress...

wont usually find a lemon tracker... 93 and up trackers had the 16 valve engine, more power and higher top speed.

if you want to go bigger tires, i think you can stuff 235s or 31s with a 2or 3 inch body lift. still get better MPG than your blazer

KofC, 4x4 and 28mpg! Not many Samurai's around here, and the few that are around the owner's know what they have and expect $$$ for them. The Blazer isn't what I need right now unfortunately.

Thanks guys, any body else?

If you were looking for a project you should get a Samurai, then put the 1.6L FI engine. If not, just buy the tracker.

Re: Looking at Trackers, what should I look out for?

I just bought in October a 90 Tracker. Its 1.6 w/ throttle body FI. It needed a clutch cable, battery cables and still needs 1 front 1/2 shaft replaced as it gets to making a terrible noise if turned too tight in 4WD. Otherwise the things a straight little car.

Convert tops are negotiable, and cheap to replace thru Ebay. I'd just shake it down carefully for leaks and noises like any other used car. Reason I bought mine was because of the dead simple-reliable reputation they have. Good luck shopping!
