Need Help w/Drivetrain Problem

I have a symptom that I need help with. Driving to work today my Samurai lost all power to the rear wheels. When I was accerelating (I can't remember if I was shifting gears or not) and it felt like the clutch just disapeared and all rear wheel power suddenly went away. I drifted to the side of the road and I checked the clutch cable which is fine. I started the engine again, which tells me that the flywheel is still in tact, and pushed in the clutch. I can put the transmission in gear with the clutch either engaged or disengaged and nothing happens. It seems that the clutch is either gone bad, which I doubt since it has not given me no prior indications, or perhaps the throw-out bearing went south.

So basically the symtoms are no rear wheel power with clutch engaged, engine spins, no burn clutch smell, clutch pedal does seems a little different.

My best guess if my throw-out bearing is FUBAR. Anyone else agree/disagree?

Re: Need Help w/Drivetrain Problem

Its probably not the bearing, its the clutch pressure plate and perhaps the clutch. When the plate goes bad it doesnt allow the clutch to transfer all the power to the transmission. You could check the cables, but this little problem plagued me for a while causing me to drop the tranny 7times in one week till I figured it out. The damm book gives test procedures for the pressure plate and it all looked good, but I ended up getting a new pressure plate. And after putting it in everything worked fine.

Check to make sure your transfer case didn't pop into neutral.

I agree with Farther- Check the T-case, your sheet may be bad or the body hit the lever. (Body lift?) See if the input
shaft to the t-case is spinning. Good luck

It shifts in and out of 4x4. I will check it again. The thing is I was driving down the road when this happened. Doesn't this usually happen while shifting in and out of 4x4?

Sounds like your clutch is shot to me. We've had this happen before, though it has been while out 4wheeling.

Re: Need Help w/Drivetrain Problem

Tim,

If you need a hand installing a new clutch I'm available Saturday during the day. I was going to do the 1.6-8V swap into my Sami but Rob's out of town and the engine's sitting in his garage. I did have some spare clutches lying around but I think they're all gone or rusted up. Let me know if I can help you do the install. It's not dificult work, just time consuming....

I think I was your clutch heading south on Highway 75 through Atlanta. I guess it sinced winter coming and is now off to Flordia. Or maybe it got on one of those time share deals. LOL
